2. FREDERICK2 LEATHERS (JOHANNAS1 LEDER) was born 1691 in Switzerland, and died 1749 in Howard Twp, Centre, Lancaster Co, PA. He married ANNA ELIZABETH. She was born 1707 in Germany, and died 1749 in Howard Twp, Centre, Lancaster Co, PA.

Notes for F
REDERICK LEATHERS:
On August 24, 1728, eighty Palatines (district in SW Germany)with their families, about 200 persons, imported on the ship Mortonhouse. John Coultas, from Deal, was the ship's Master. The ship sailed on June 15. The list totaled 205 persons, including 80 males above 16 years of age, 69 women, and 56 children. Among the 80 males above the age of 16 years was Fredrick Leeder (Leathers). This was the sixth ship to land European immigrants in Philadelphia during the period from 1726-1776.

All male immigrants above the age of 16 were required to appear before the Board of the Provincial Council, usually in the Court House in Philadelphia, and to repeat and subscribe their names, or make their mark, to the following Declaration:

"We subscribers, natives and late inhabitants of ________, having transported ourselves and families into this Province of Pennsylvania, a colony subject to the crown of Great Britian, in hopes and expectation of finding a retreat and peaceable settlement therein, do solemnly promise and engage, that we will be faithful and bear true allegiance to his present MAJESTY, KING GEORGE THE SECOND, and his successors, kings of Great Britian, and will be faithful to the proprietor of this Province; and that we will demean ourselves peaceably to all his said Majesty's subjects, and strictly observe and conform to the Laws of England and of this Province, to the utmost of our power and the best of our understanding."

This particular declaration was made September 21, 1727, by the "late inhabitants of the Palatinate upon the Rhine and places adjacent."

Present day descendents who have traced their ancestry to Fredrick Leeder, which is the way he signed his name on the Oath Of Allegiance, report that they have found his name spelled several ways---Leder, Leeder, Lederer, Lether, Leather, and Leathers--and sometimes more than one way on the same document. This is attributed to the use of phonetic spelling by the official or clerk in writing the names on documents. Other variations of the Leathers name include Ledder and Leatherer. Leder in German means Leather.

Fredrick settled in Lancaster County, PA, in the area that today is in York County, PA. The Provence of Pennsylvania was formed in 1682 with the three original counties---Bucks, Chester, and Philadelphia. Lancaster County was created out of Chester as the State's fourth county in 1727 or 1729. York County was created out of Lancaster County in 1748 and became the State's fifth county.

Additional Info:

The information I have states that Frederick Leder was born in Switzerland and fled the area because of the percution experienced for his Mennonite beliefs. He sailed on the ship Mortonhouse and arrived in Philadelphia, PA on August 23, 1728. Frederick and his wife, Anna Elizabeth, lived in Lancaster county (area that later became York Co.) The family went to Centre Co. and my particular line remained there.
