Descendants of John Gildeon Kennedy

Generation No. 1

1. JOHN GILDEON1 KENNEDY was born March 24, 1854 in Ireland, and died September 24, 1929 in Brown City, Michigan. He married HANNAH DEBBIE ANGER, daughter of NELSON ANGER. She was born 1860 in Michigan, and died 1915 in Brown City, Michigan.

Notes for J
OHN GILDEON KENNEDY:
From Emeline Kennedy:

John G Kennedy was Irish through and through. He admonished me to always remember I was Irish. However, he neglected to tell me my grandmother Kennedy was Scotch. Once we were taken by relatives to Canada to visit her relatives and I could hardly understand the Scottish brogue.

Grandpa was born in Ireland, coming to the US from Canada. They settled on a farm near Brown City, Michigan. There were nine boys in the family and two girls. They lived in a log house for some years until they were able to build a very lovely red brick home. As some of the men went north to the Otsego lake area to work in the lumber mills. It is said that some of the lumber was brought from that area for the new home. Today that home still stands, looking timely by today's standards. It is located on the Stiles as Rd. North of Imlay City (M-53), east about one mile on the south side of the road. I remember when it was built, it was in an area in the path of the tragic Michigan fire, and the only trees were saplings.

Grandpa was a lover of horses. There was a very large barn with half doors where the stallions were kept. He had a slick little horse named bud that was his personal method of travel hitched to a two person cart. Sometimes he would pick me up at my one room school on his way home from town. He would hold me in his lap and we would go like the wind. How proud I was in front of my classmates. Later when my husband and I would visit our grandchildren in Columbus, we would always pick them up at their school in our shiny new Buicks. Grandfather Kennedy could never have imagined such a thing.

Note from Martin Metzker:

What grandma did not elaborate on is the time she picked us up in the new Buick with new power windows. I was sticking my head out the window when Grandma Emeline decided to close the window. As I saw it closing (I was probably 8 at the time) I was yelling for her to stop. She was busy talking to my baby sister Carrie, and my brother Kevin was just laughing. Just as the window was about to jam my neck against the top of the door, she saw what she was doing and stopped it in time. Luckily Grandpa was not in the car, or she would have been admonished for being distracted and possibly damaging one of his grandsons. Interestingly enough, they never had another car with power windows.

Emeline:

Grandpa John Kennedy lived a long life, outliving Grandma by many years. Being Irish, he had many needs. Once, as I remember was the need for salted herring, which he ate for breakfast. The men would take the wagon and barrels and go to Lake Huron to purchase the fish. When they came home, the women of the family (including the daughters-in-laws) had to clean and salt the fish for the winter. I think they were soaked in milk overnight to freshen them before eating.

None of these children ever lived close to him as adults. A daughter lived in Boston and some of the men moved to California.
