Benjamin Franklin and his wife Ellen (Kinney) both came from Ireland. They were married before 1862. Their first son, Matthew, was born in 1863 in Illinois. Their second son, my grandfather Benjamin Franklin, was born 5 January 1864 in Cairo, Illinois. They were soon on the move and their third son, John was born in 1866 in Kansas. Moving on again, they settled in Nebraska. They had their fourth son Thomas (1870) and their daughter Ellen (1873) in Nebraska.
Between the birth of Ellen and the 1880 census, Benjamin died leaving his wife, Ellen a widow with five children. In 1880, the family was counted in the census in Sidney, Cheyenne County, Nebraska.
In 1880, Benjamin followed the railroad to Idaho and met Harriet Ann (Hattie) Spidell. They were married 2 September 1880 and had their first son, Marion Clarence on 10 April 1881. They had a total of 13 children - only six of whom survived to adulthood. My father, Benjamin Franklin, was the 11th child.
