Notes for Sebastian Wygal:
Sebastian Wygal served as a horse trooper along with James
Miller, Sr. during the Revolution. He was appointed overseer of the
road from Ingles Ferry to Sinking Spring May 6, 1794.
The old Wygal clock of much repute was made for Sebastian in
1808-9 by Peter Rife. The raw woods were produced in Richmond and
tradition has it that there were 22,777 pieces in it. The dial and
several other parts were imported from London. David Whipple, husband
of Anne Miller either made or assembled the movements. After his
death, it passed into the family of his son John, and upon the death
of its last owner in that family was bought at auction by Sebastian
Wygal Miller and by him, given to Professor James S. Miller of Emory
and Henry College.
