My Taylor research starts in Orange County, N.C., when ROBERT TAYLOR married a JANE BUTLER on 10 November 1800. ROBERT and JANE were still in Orange County in 1810 census, and left about 1813. Their journey probably included some stay in South Carolina and/or Georgia. By 1823, they had settled in St. Clair County, Alabama, where ROBERT died about 1830. Their children spread into Alabama, Mississippi, and Arkansas.

ROBERT AND JANE'S child, EMILY EVERGREEN AMERICA TAYLOR, first married a JOHN STA(E)PP in St. Clair County, Alabama, and later when widowed married a WILLIAM SPARKS in the same county. EMILY and WILLIAM moved to Pontotoc County, Mississippi about 1855, where WILLIAM was killed in 1867 in a gunfight. One of EMILY'S daughters, CHARLOTTE J.J. SPARKS, became the third wife of RICHARD PATE, my greatgrandfather.

The PATE family research starts in Bibb County, Alabama, where ALLEN PATE moved from North Carolina just prior to 1820. One son, CHARLES PATE, was the father of RICHARD PATE.

This maternal family side documentation is rather complete from 1800. However, our attempts to date to document ancestors for either the TAYLOR or PATE families has not been successful. As a footnote, either ROBERT TAYLOR or his wife JANE BUTLER were full-blook Cherokee, according to family letters.

So goes the research. Any help with the parents of ALLEN PATE, b.1776, N.C., ROBERT TAYLOR, b.1776, GA., or JANE BUTLER will greatly help.
