Moved to Mecklenburg County, N.C. sometime prior to 1766 as it is in that year that he is listed as a "foot soldier" under Captian Adam Alexander esq. in the Mecklenburg Militia.In 1767 he bought 220 acres of land along McAlpine Creek in Mecklenburg County, N.C. between Matthews and Providence townships for 57 pounds 6 pence.He later bought 50 acres of land in 1777 from William and Sarah Irwin.He later sold back 47 of those acres.Between 1774 and 1775 he served as a juror in Mecklenburg County six times.Since this area is on the S.C. border, many patriots joined S.C. units during The Revolution.Thomas appears in the "Roster of South Carolina Patriots in the American Revolution".He served 10 months as a private under Captain Jacob Barnett in the regiment of Light Dragoons of Lt. Col. Henry Hampton commanded by General Thomas Sumter.Fought at the Battle of Blackstock Farm, South Carolina on 20 Nov 1780.We believe he died in Mecklenburg County, N.C. about 1813 as he is last found listed on the Mecklenbureg tax records of 1812/1813 but so far, no will or inventory of estate has yet been found.
Notes for SARAH IRWIN:
Born in a portion of Anson County that became Mecklenburg County in 1762.Her heritage is guessed primarily from the will of Alexander Irwin who died in 1780.In his will he left money and or land to his sons - John, William, James, Samuel, and Robert.He also left an equal share of money to Thomas Gribble, James Beard, and William Zlackstock.Although there is no mention of relationship, it is known that each of these men were married to women whose maiden name was Irwin.The guess is that they must have been his daughters.Why else would he leave them equal shares?Some have supposed that her parents were William and Sarah Irwin.That conclusion has been arrived at by the fact that Thomas and Sarah Irwin Gribble had some land dealings with William.There has never been any proof found to my knowledge.My guess is that William was Sarah's brother that was mentioned in Alexander Irwin's will.
