Thomas was born on the South Branch of the Potomac River, thought to be
near Cedar Creek in Hampshire County, VA.
The book, "History of Education in West Virginia", published in 1904
states, "Just 30 years after the Pringle brothers began their pioneer
life in the hollow of the Sycamore tree standing on the south bank near
the mouth of Turkey Run and 9 months after the immortal Washington had
left the White House to become a private citizen at Mount Vernon, Mr.
Haddox, in a primative log cabin near the mouth of Radcliff's Run, less
than 2 miles south from the present town of Buckhannon, indeed, within
the suburbs of the town, taught the first school in the bounds of the
present county of Upshur".The book goes on to state that among the
pupils who attended this first school was, "Thomas Carney".The year was
around 1784.
After the Revolutionary War, Thomas was a scout for the State of Virginia
for eighteen years during the Indian Wars. There are several stories of

Hacker's Creek Journal".
In 1792, he was called into service by Virginia Governor Henry Lee.
After serving 173 days, he was discharged on 12/1/1792.His pension
claim was later refused by the government, because he was unable to prove
he was old enough for such service.

land on both sides of Stony Run, from Mesiah, Saxton and Hannah of
Frederick County, VA.The location was on a branch of the Buchanon
River. He later purchased another 60 acres from Henry Jackson and wife
Mary.In addition, it is known that Thomas owned land on the East side

states, "Into this sylvan paradise, broken only by the packhorse trail
leading from the Salt Springs above Charleston to the settlements at the
mouth of the Little Kanawha River, came the pioneers of advancing
civilization, the first low wash of waves where soon should roll a human
sea, and planted their cabins amid the beauties of the wilderness.
William Bonnett, Thomas Carney and George Casto, were the names of men
who first built homes on this, the "Heart of Jackson County" and many of
the citizens of her communities are today proud to trace their ancestry
back to these men."
