The Mikes family, as we know it, originated in Lišov, Czechoslavakia There were 5 brothers and 1 sister who came over to the US between 1880 and 1890. One sister stayed in Czechoslovakia (Frannie). They settled in several places in Iowa including Fredricksburg and West Bend. Five Generations later, the Mikes family is spread all over the nation.

I am a direct decendent of Adolph Roman Mikes, one of the brothers who came to the States in 1887 at 17 years of age. He started working in Chicago for Armour & Co. and later bought a 1/2 share of the City Meat Market in Fredericksburg, Iowa with his brother John in 1897. He sold his share to brother Charles and moved to West Bend, Iowa to open The Mikes Bros. Meat Market with brother Joe in 1901.

The Mikes family reunion took place on July 7, 2001 in Clear Lake, IA. There were over 30 people in attendance and even relatives from the Czech Republic. Thanks to Richard & Lou Ann Mikes & Marketa Dvorakova for putting on a great reunion. Everyone who attended got a lot out of it.

I have gotten some inquiries from time to time from extended relatives due to this home page. It is great to meet relatives that you didn't know existed! Please feel free to contact me anytime.
