According to research done, "Michael Kobi" was born in the village of Spehare, Solvenia in 1874.Michael came to the United States in November 18, 1898 on the boat Patria to Ellis Island from Hamburg, Germany at the age of 25 years old. The spelling of Michael Kobi is Majer Kobi.His place of residence M. Jusop, Hungarian-Heb. However, this is not conclusive information so far. If any new information is to be found, it will be included within the family tree.
Michael Kobi first task in a new country was traveling to Whiting, Indiana where his brother Matthew Kobi and wife JoAnna lived on the Southeast corner of 126th and White Oak Avenue in Whiting, Indiana. This location he owned and operated as a tavern for while, then Matthew and JoAnna moved to St. Louis, Mo.
Michael found employment at Standard Oil Refinery in the year 1889 until 1929, after receiving employment, in the year 1907 Michael took a leave of absence for 30 days and took with $300.00 and left the town of Whiting. Michael took this time to visit his Matthew in St. Louis, Mo. Michael last job at Standard Oil Company was a Fireman at the Stills where he work for ten years. Michael Kobi retired from Standard Oil Company in 1931, due to a disability from lung disease from inhaling dust from a clay furnace.
Where Michael meet Mare Karin and were married, the newly-weds move back to Whiting, Indiana. The couple lived at 10- - White oak Avenue, two homes away from north of 125th street.Michael and Mara had their first son named, Michael N Kobi in 1910 and stayed there from 1910 to 1914. Then in 1914 relocating, to five homes south 1025 White Oak Avenue, Berry Lake, Indiana.1 The house originally had four rooms' two bedrooms for twelve children. More rooms where added after remodeling. On this land Michael and Mara raised chickens and pigs in the backyard. The Kobi family bought two piglets every spring to raise them, later the hogs were butchered for food sausage and hams, what was leave Mare made soap from the fat. Food was cooked and server in the lower level, where there was a wood fuel cooking stove. Michael's greatest pleasure was making wine.
He bought 50 boxes of grapes each year and made 5 barrels of wine equaling 250 gallons a year. Michael and JoAnna were parishioners at Sacred Heart Church2.In 1929 Michael purchased an automobile and stared to Attend St. George's Slovenian Catholic Church in South Chicago, Illinois. In 1936 the family rejoined Sacred heart Church in Whiting, Indiana.
The town of Whiting, Indiana restructures the town. In 1919 a water filtration plant was build at the old cemetery and filtered Lake Michigan water was available for the first time in Whiting, Indiana and no garbage collection until 1920, the garbage dump was south of 129th street at White Oak Avenue.In 1922 in-door plumbing was introduce and was installed when the city sewers were installed, later in the year electricity was installed, before he used kerosene lamps. Gas-lines were installed in 1926 before Michael used wood and coal.
FootNote1:The house at 2526 Schrage Avenue was moved from Berry Lake, Indiana to Whiting, Indiana. Berry Lake which was connected to Lake Michigan was purchased by Standard Oil Company. Later, filled in with sand surrounding dunes, this area became the Standard Oil Refinery Company
