Generation No. 2

2. ISAAC2 MILLER (ISAAC1) was born Bet. 1767 - 1770 in Kent, Conn., U.S.A. or Cornwallis, N.S., Canada,, and died Abt. 1837 in York or Carleton Co., N.B., Canada. He married (1) SUSANNAH GALLOP December 10, 1793 in New Brunswick, Canada, daughter of NATHANIEL GALLOP and HANNAH PARENT. She was born Bet. 1776 - 1778 in Nova Scotia, Canada, and died Abt. 1814 in New Brunswick, Canada. He married (2) HARRIET PARKS July 31, 1815 in Northampton or Woodstock,York Co., N.B., Canada, daughter of JONATHAN PARKS and SARAH BRADLEY. She was born 1798 in Grand Lake area, Queens County, N.B., Canada,, and died 1873 in Wisconsin, USA.

Notes for I
SAAC MILLER:
By Paul B. Miller
The "Gallup Genealogy," P. 29, shows Susannah Gallup, daughter of Nathaniel Gallup and his first wife, Hannah, married Isaac Miller of Queen's County on 10 Dec. 1793. It is probable that Isaac married his stepsister. This is not proven.

See Provincial Archives, New Brunswick, at Fredericton, "Baptisms, Misc. Marriages and Burials of the Anglican Church of Woodstock, N. B., 1791-1838." Isaac's children were baptized on 14 July 1817: Iva (Ira) # 1001, Oliver # 1002, Lydia # 1003, Mary # 1004, Aaron # 1005, Phebe # 1006, and George # 1007.
Deborah Miller was baptized there on 8 Aug. 1819, parents, Isaac and Hariot Miller, Northampton farmer, # 1050.
The Bissett Cook Family Gedcom by Bev Barney has additional vital listings for many of the children which may be valid. However she gives the birth date of Isaac Miller as 1783, which would make him 13 years old when his son Isaac was born in 1796, and is therefore believed to be an error. She shows Isaac's father as Isaac Miller, b. 1748 in Holland. John Allan Miller also says this Isaac came from Holland, but not when. It is possible that the father Isaac came from Holland to New York and moved on to Litchfield or Kent, CT. I believe it is more likely that the ancestor from Holland was an earlier generation, but I have found nothing to verify this idea. Bev also says Isaac was married to Hannah Parks, b. 1776, not Gallup, and married second to Harriet Parks, b. 1798, d. 1873. Bev's birth dates for Lydia, Mary and Phoebe are included on the family group sheet, but Oliver's birth date is retained as 1799 instead of Bev's 1804. Bev lists the birth dates of Isaac and Harriet Parks's children Colin, "Doeborah," Hannah, Harriet, Sarah, and Leonard as 1828, possibly a baptismal date for some but not all of them.

Barry Price's "Price Family Tree" in the Ancestry World Tree project confirms Isaac's parents as Isaac Miller and Deborah Newcomb. It also says that Isaac's first wife was Hannah Gallup and his second wife was Harriet Parks, married by Parson Frederick Dibblee of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel,
1814 in Northampton, York, N.B.; marriage Bann 31 July 1815 in Northampton, Carleton Co., N.B. The birth dates listed here for George, Hannah, Colin, Richard, John and Leonard are included on the family page.
See John Allan Miller letter, Aug. 8, 1908. In this letter written to Herbert Miller in Admire, Kansas, by his uncle, John Allan Miller, from Thomas (near Seattle), Washington, Isaac's family as he knew them is discussed in depth. He says his grandfather, Issac, "was imported stock, not exported as many of the ancestors of the FFV's (First Families of Virginia) were. He was imported from Holland.
Father, Isaac Miller, Sr. (B. 1770's) was from Nova Scotia to New Brunswick, was married twice. By his first wife there was thirteen children, only seven of whom reached maturity." This letter is quoted extensively in the following family sheets and notes. At the end of his letter, John Allan says, "I will say that I have written this off hand and have not read it over. I am sure there are numerous errors."

Calvin Miller notes:
My investiagation of the Anglican Church Baptisms of July 14,1817, found at the L.P. Fisher Library in Woodstock, New Brunswick, show no association whatsoever of the "children of Isaac"
with Isaac and "Hariot" Miller, yet they are shown as residents of Northamptont.
All of the forementioned "children of Isaac" were listed as adults including George who was reportedly born in 1817. This list also shows "Ive", "Arron", Oliver, Lydia, Mary, and Phebe.
However, in a "PDF" file of the supposedly same record I have saved from the Carleton County Genweb, Isaac is listed in the place of Iva that Paul Miller lists, or Ive as I have found. "Ann" replaces "Arron" from the library record, and George, the only one clearly shown as offspring of Isaac and Hariot, is shown to have been born June 21,1817.
There is mention of an Aaron Miller in Land Registry Office records in the Town of Woodstock that I have yet to fully investigate. He may be the son of Christopher Miller Sr, reportedly descended from George Miller of the Queens Rangers.
Update, March 2008: An investigation of records at the New Brunswick Provincial Archives in Fredericton, NB shows two different records. One is entitled Woodstock Anglican Church Records 1791-1816. This list contains the following names under the date July 14, 1817 ( Date makes no sense); (all listed as adults) Miller Iva, Oliver, Lydia, Mary, Arron, Phebe, George.
The second record is entitled Woodstock and Northampton Anglican Church Records-Baptisms 1812-1830 under the date July 14 1817:
Isaac Miller of age Northampton Farmer

Ruth Winona Grant, author of the family genealogy, "The Grant Connection", discusses the marriage of Isaac's daughter Hannah, born 1820 to John Grant born 1811. She states, " Hannah was the daughter of Isaac Miler(2) and his second wife, Harriet Parks, married in 1814. Isaac appears to have been 30 years older then Harriet, the daughter of Jonathan and Sarah (Bradley) Parks, married in 1793. Harriet was born in the Grand Lake area of N.B. in 1798. She is buried in Pickett,Wisconsin. Hannah's father was born in Cornwallis, N.S. the son of Isaac Miller Sr. (who immigrated from Holland in 1760) and Deborah Newcomb, married in 1766. Isaac (2) married (1) Hannah Gallup, and their eldest son Isaac(3), was born about 1796, making a difference of 39 years between his eldset and youngest child. Harriet was a widow with 8 of her 10 children living, beside seven or eight of her 13 step children, when she married in 1846 (2) Tristram Winslow Hillman, who was himself a widower with eight children by his first wife Mary Foster. Harriet and Tristram had no children. Harriet died in 1873.There is no known relationship between these Isaac Millers and George Miller of the Queens Rangers, whose son married Phoebe Sophie Grant."
See marriage notes for Harriet and T. Hillman. Also on this same date, October 8, 1846, listed in Rev. James Henry Tupper's Marriage Register, Queensbury, York Co., Jemima A. Miller of Dumfries (daughter of Oliver Miller/ Sarah Hartley) to Wm H. Anderson of Dumfries. Witnesses: Chas (?) and Chas Hartley.
Note: York County Marriages, 1812-1837, containing all of the surname Miller, page 49, shows "only" Isaac Miller of Northampton 31 July 1815 to Hannah Parks of Northampton, witnesses: Samuel Gallop and Albert Smith; Isaac Miller of Wakefield 31 March 1831 to Mary Jane Nesmith of Northampton, Witnesses: David Cronkhite and John Clynick.
In 1815, Isaac of Wakefield would only be about 20 years old.I believe this marriage in 1815 is that of the Isaac(2) and the other is of his son Isaac, born in 1795. It is also possible that the Hannah Parks listed as married in 1815 is a mis-print. We know that John Allan Miller referred to his mother as "Harriet" and his father Isaac Miller from Nova Scotia. It is possible that Isaac, b. 1795 did first marry a Hannah Parks of another Parks family or one not closely connected to Harriet.
Note concerning forementioned Albert Smith: I "suspect" this Albert Smith may have been the father of James W. Smith, b. September 12, 1834, who married Oliver Miller's daughter Christina. I have not yet found any evidence. However James and Christina had a son Albert, born in 1866.

The Bissett Cook family tree by Bev Barney shows Hannah Parks b. 1776, "d. Bef 1815" as the spouse of Isaac Miller, b. 1783, which as stated earlier is an incorrect date of birth for Isaac Miller (2). There are no parents shown on this site for this Hannah Parks. There is no spouse shown on this site for Hannah Parks, b. 1815, sister of Harriet Parks. This Hannah was certainly not the one married in 1815. This same site also lists Harriet Parks, b. 1798 as the spouse of Isaac Miller b. 1783.

Along with the following information from the lDS Ancestoral file, I believe that the witness Samuel Gallop, at the wedding of Isaac Miller in 1815, is a good indication that Isaac's first wife was a Gallop.
I suspect that Samuel(b. 1794) witness of the 1815 marriage, is the son of Benjamin Gallop, born 1769, son of Nathaniel Gallop, b. 1744. LDS Ancestoral File lists Susannah Gallop, b. abt. 1776,in Nova Scotia, daughter of Nathaniel Gallop and Hannah Parent, M. Dec 10,1793, Queens, Isaac Miller ,b. abt. 1776
This file lists 3 Susannah Gallops born to Nathaniel and Hannah; b. 1773,1776, and 1778. It also lists Nathaniel as born in 1734 instead of 1744 and Hannah born abt.1739. This file shows Hannah Gallop, born 1760, married Edward Burpee.

USANNAH GALLOP:
By Paul B. Miller
Susannah's father Nathaniel Gallop (Gallup) married second to Deborah Newcomb, wife of Isaac(1) Miller.
Calvin Miller Notes: Ruth Winona Grant, author of the family genealogy, "The Grant Connexion", States "Isaac (2) married (1) Hannah Gallup, and their eldest son Isaac(3), was born about 1796."
I find it interesting to note that in the book, Planters and Pioneers, written by Ester Clark Wright, Nathaniel Gallop who married Hannah ? is discussed (see notes for Deborah Newcomb) and children listed include Hannah and does not include a Susannah. It is also interesting that this book shows another child listed of Nathaniel's as Samuel. There was a Samuel Gallop present as a witness to what has been perceived to be the marriage of Isaac (3) and "Hannah" Parks in 1815. I believe this was actually the marriage of Harriet Parks and Isaac Miller(2), born 1767/70.

ARRIET PARKS:
By Paul Miller:
See John Allan Miller letter, Aug. 8, 1908. In his discussion of brother Richard, John Allan Miller says, "Mother was left with all of us eight children, almost destitute. She had 100 acres of dense forest, a few acres cleared, a small log house, and a good frame barn. I think the barn was and remains a building 26 x 36 and sixteen feet high. The land was covered with a heavy growth of hardwood timber. The soil was exceedingly poor; it would only produce two crops of grain then it had to be seeded to grass, which it would produce for a few years and then it was entirely exhausted. Each year we had to fell a few acres, as much as we able to clear, and so on as long as we lived there. When mother went on this place George was fifteen and Leonard a nursing babe. All of us to be fed and clothed. How she ever did it has always been a mystery to me. I think we had enough to eat always. Our clothing Mother literally took from the sheep's back and fashioned into our garments. George soon became of age and started for himself, thus Colin was to the fore. Then I remember we fared pretty well but when he left and Abner was the head of the family we were up against it sure enough. He was rather, we will say erratic. Everything went to the dogs. Mother had to expel him. That left Richard the oldest at home. He was about fourteen, John about eleven, and Leonard about nine. Us three kids just had to wrest a living out of that wilderness and we did and did it well. I remember after the first year we had plenty, even a surplus. We had things to sell. The third year we had our barn full to the rafters and plenty of meat and vegetables. Then Mother married her second husband, Tristrem (?) Hillman. Richard then left home and worked in the lumber woods. The winter of '47 and 8 he boarded at Abraham Schriver's and went to school. Later on when he was nineteen he married Esther Schriver and moved to Wisc. in 1850 or 1851.He got some land and built a house and Esther and I passed the winter in it. I was with them about six months and became very attached to Esther. My recollections of her are all pleasant. I never saw Richard after March, 1852, when I went to California."

Note: When George was fifteen, Leonard was not yet born if he was born in 1835. If Leonard was born in 1835 and was a nursing babe when Harriot was left with the family, Isaac must have died about 1837 and George would have been about twenty years old. Richard was fourteen and John was eleven in 1843.

John Allan Miller says of his mother: "Her first husband had 13 children and for about 17 years she was a mother to them and she always spoke lovingly of them all. Then for perhaps 20 years she was father and mother to her own ten. Then for more than ten (or two?) years she cared for her second husbands eight children and then later on she was grandmother to her grandchildren whose name was legion."

It is not difficult to read between the lines to see the demands made of her and she met them as a good mother should and faithfully doing her duty to them all. Few women ever did or ever could have performed a task of this magnitude.(Paul Miller)

Source: Ruth Winona Grant, Author of "The Grant Connection"
Ruth quotes Isaac's and Harriet's son, John Allen Miller, in his letters written in 1908 to his cousin in Kansas where he refers to his mother "Harriet".
There is no record of this marriage within the York County Marriages of 1812-1837 as transcribed by Geo H Hayward. Northampton, Southampton, and Woodstock were all of York county until the formation of Carleton from York County in 1831. Carleton County Act, 1831-32

By Paul Miller:
See John Allan Miller letter, Aug. 8, 1908. "Colin never married . He became the head of the family after brother George left and the family fared well. He traveled across the plains with John Allan Miller in 1852 and they were together in California for four years. He joined the 14th Wisconsin Infantry in 1861 and was killed on 23 May 1863 at Vicksburg, Mississippi. He was a broad gauge (?) man, had many sterling qualities. Was universally loved and respected. I knew him better than I did any of my other brothers, and I felt his loss for many years."
