This is an on-going genealogical research project of my family history. Surnames include; SPICER, AVERY, ALLEN, BREWSTER, MASON, MINER, IRISH, GEER, PALMER, CHAPMAN. Any new information will be greatly appreciated. Genealogy is not just a search for ones family roots but, at least in my case, has proven to provide many lessons in history. The Descendants of Gregory Spicer contains information on some very colorful ancestors that go back many hundreds of years; kings and queens, heroes and villains [mostly depending on your point of view!] such as our 28th great grandfather William the Conqueror. By 1060 William had a considerable reputation as a warrior, for he was generally successful in his wars. He was a tenacious opponent, brutal at times. It has been recorded that 3 Spicer brothers, one who is our ancestor, came to England from France with William The Conqueror as he led the Norman invasion of England (1066) Additionally, William is our 28th great-grandfather, while his sister Adalaide is our 26th great grandmother, through our 18th great grandparents, Elizabeth Strathbogie and her husband Sir John le Scrope. Elizabeth is William's 9th great granddaughter while her husband John is Adelaide's 7th great grandson. One of the earliest Spicers on record was William de l'Epee -William of the Sword, who successively changed the surname into de l'Espee, Del'Espec, De l'Especier and finally to Le Spycer when he and his 2 brothers went from Normandy with William the Conqueror in AD 1066. Also among our historical ancestors was our 11th great grandfather the Elder William Brewster, who came to America aboard the Mayflower and is often credited with writing the Mayflower Compact which was the basis for our Constitution. Researching Wm Brewster lead me to discover that, although they were Puritans, the pilgrims were colorful people; I don't mean their characters but their clothing! In fact they seldom wore black, preferring vibrant colors such as pinks, purples and reds as well as earth tones; And they never - ever wore buckles on their hats, coat belts or shoes! To think they still teach that myth to elementary school children! Shakespeare wrote of our 31st great grandfather King Duncan I "The Gracious" of Scotland who was murdered by Macbeth in 1040. Macbeth married King Duncan's widow and became ruler. Duncan's son Malcolm III, our 30th great grandfather got revenge when he killed Macbeth in 1057 and became King of Scotland where he ruled until his death in 1093. Malcolm was also a great enemy of our other great grandfather William the Conqueror. Then there is Edward I (1239-1307), king of England (1272-1307)known as Longshanks, he was responsible for the death of Sir William Wallace, known today as "Braveheart". Braveheart waged war on William and in 1305 Braveheart was captured by Longshanks and executed for treason by being drawn and quartered. One of our more famous Norwegian ancestors was Rollo (Hrolf) "The Ganger" Duke of Normandy. He was reportedly from Maer, Norway and is our 31st great grandfather. He was known in the north as Hrolf the Ganger, (the walker) because he was so huge that no Northland horses could carry him and he had to follow his soldiers on foot. My greatest interest however, is in my immigrant ancestors of the 1600's. These ancestor left their homelands to set roots in the New World, and they did so successfully. Major John MASON was a military hero of the Pequot War. William BREWSTER was a great leader of the PILGRIMS. Other notable colonial ancestors are Peter SPICER, James AVERY, Robert ALLEN, Thomas MINER, John IRISH, George GEER,and Walter PALMER. Recent additions is my Royal Jesse CHAPMAN lineage which is connected to many of my immigrant ancestors lines including the Spicer, Palmer, Miner, Davis and Lestor lines
