WOODS OF ROCHE HOUSE
James William Wood was born in 1849 at Hollinsclough on the Staffordshire moorland.
He was married twice,firstly to Elizabeth Gould of Hurdlow,with whom he had six children;
Emma, John, Emily, William, Elizabeth and Mary, and then after Elizabeth died ,to Honor
Thompson of Longnor, with whom he had fifteen children, one of which did not survive.The
others were; Benjamin, James, Elsie Honor, Issac, Alice, Amy Ann, Thomas Walter, William
Reginald, John Horace, Nelly, Annie, Sidney Arthur, Matilda May and Lucy.The eldest five
children were born at Fernilee near Buxton, after which James and Honor moved to Moor
Farm, Flash Lane,Darley, and by 1896 to Roche Farm, Ashover.James died on the 22nd
of September 1930 and Honor on the 16th of February 1932.Both are buried at Ashover
along with their daughter Alice who never married.Their son Sidney Arthur was killed in
action on the 28th May 1917 in the first world war, and is commemorated at the British
Cemetery, Mazingarbe, France.
