Notes for Richard Corley:
"CORLEY (Eng.) One who came from Corley (Cranes' forest) or Coreley (slope frequented by cranes), in Shropshire and Warwickshire respectively."

From the Dictionary of American Family Names by Elsdon C. Smith, Harper & Brothers 1956

Shropshire County is in West England and Shrewsbury is the county seat.

Richard Corley is the earliest Corley of record in North America. Hanover County is near Richmond, up the James River from Jamestown and Williamsburg. The first ship reached Jamestown from England in 1607, not too long before Richard was born. I don't know where Richard was born, but if he wasn't born in England, his parents probably were.

As Virginia got too crowded, and more land opened up to the south, descendants of Richard Corley migrated to the Edgefield County area of South Carolina and from there to Georgia, Alabama and other states.

Notes for Thomas Petty:
Thomas Petty (Pettus) was indicted for killing a man in England. To escape the punishment (death
at that time even for killing a man in self defense), he fled England with his uncle Colonel Thomas
Pettus in 1637 or 1638, posing as his uncle's son. The Pettus family was very influential, his father was the mayor of Norwich, so it was easy to get him out of the country, especially by his uncle who had left England several times during the Thirty Years War. They first appeared in Jamestown, Norfolk, Virginia in 1643, with no record of where they were in the years since they left England. His uncle became a prominent resident of Jamestown, but there is no record of young Thomas for the next six years. Then during the Civil War between King Charles and Oliver Cromwell, he reappeared in Virginia, but had changed the spelling of his last name from Pettus to Petty. He was nearly fifty when he married Katherine Morris in Old Rappahannock County in 1657. They had only two children, a daughter, Dorothy, and a son Thomas who born after he died.
