William Stone (b. Abt. 1608, d. November 16, 1683)
William Stone (son of Samuel Stone)16 was born Abt. 1608 in Guilford, England, and died November 16, 1683 in East Guilford, New Haven, Connecticut. He married Hannah Bradley in England.
Notes for William Stone: William was born about 1608 at Hereford, near Guilford, Surrey, England. He was in Hertfordshire about 1610. William and his brother John came to this country with Rev. Henry Whitfield's first company which sailed from England in May, 1639, in two ships. When the ships were about ten days out, a covenant was signed. In July the "St. John" entered the harbor of Quinnipack or New Haven, the first vessels from across the ocean to reach that port. They purchased land from the Mohegan Sachem Uncas and named it Guilford after Guilford, England, where many of them had lived.
COVENANT We, whose names are hereunder written, intending by God's gracious permission to plant ourselves in New England, and if it may be, in the southerly part, about Quinnipiac: We do faithfully promise, each to each for ourselves and families, and those that belong to us; that we will, the Lord assisting us, sit down and join ourselves together in one intire plantation: and to be helpful each to the other in every common work, according to every man's ability and as need shall require; and we promise not to desert or leave each other or the plantation, but with the consent of the rest, or the greater part of the company who have entered into this engagement.
As for our gathering together in a church way, and the choice of officers and members to be joined together in that way, we do refer ourselves until such time as it shall please God to settle us in our plantation.
In witness whereof we suscribe our hands, the first day of June, 1639.
