Who were the parents of William Milstead and Lydia Verlinda Luckett?

Family Group

WILLIAM MILSTEAD was born Abt. 1797 in Charles County, Maryland, and died in Charles County, Maryland. He married LYDIA "VERLINDA" LUCKETT. She was born 1798 in Charles County, Maryland.

Children of WILLIAM MILSTEAD and LYDIA LUCKETT are:

i. OSCAR2 MILSTEAD.

ii. MARY C. MILSTEAD, m. ALEXANDER ROSS, 23 December 1850, Charles County, Maryland. Marriage: 23 December 1850, Charles County, Maryland

iii. WILLIAM A. MILSTEAD, b. Abt. 1828. William was listed as a sailor in the 1860 Census

iv. JOSIAS HENRY MILSTEAD, b. 1831, Charles County, Maryland.

v. GEORGE L, MILSTEAD, b. Abt. 1833.

Circumstantial Evidence

The strongest evidence for William being the son of Walter is the census records.  It is a process of elimination where you look at all of the Milsteads in Charles County with children the right age to be William Milstead, and then account for them one by one.  That leaves only Walter remaining, or some other Milstead that was not counted on any of the censuses.  Further, the year Walter disaapears from the census (1840) is the year that William shows up as a adult head of household.

Here are the details:

The 1800 Census has 4 Milstead that have male children of the right age to be William's father: Thomas, Walter, Barton, and Samuel.  Samuel, Thomas, and Walter were brothers.  Thomas's two sons in this age were Thomas b.1797 and Ignatius b. 1799.  Samuel had four sons that I know of, but I do not have birth dates for them.  None of them were named William.  Barton's son was Judson, born around 1800, maybe Janice Parker has the exact date.  That leaves Walter. Note: This Walter is not Walter Warren Milstead- b. 6/1815

Walter showed up on the Charles County census for 1800, 1810, 1820 and 1830.  He is not on the 1840 Charles County census.

I checked the Maryland Probate records for 1830-1840 and there is nothing on Walter.  Land records might show property being transferred.  Walter also shows up in some early church records from Chicamuxen, but no useful info is to be had there.

Some census records used appear below:

The Thompson Family Connection

One other fact sometimes cites for Walter being the father of William is the will of Teresa Thompson, 2nd wife of Thomas that reads "I give and bequeath unto my niece Virlinda Milstead the wife of William Milstead the sum of one hundred dollars, all my wearing apparel and saddle……”  You could interpret this to mean that Virlinda was her niece by virtue of being married to the nephew of Teresa’s husband Thomas Milstead, but I do not think this is the case.  If you read Teresa’s father’s will it is clear that Teresa’s sister Ann married a Luckett, and was therefore Virlinda Luckett’s mother.  Therefore Virlinda was in fact Teresa’s biological niece rather than a niece through marrage (although the marriage route could also have been true if Walter is indeed William’s father).

From the will of Thomas Thompson from 1815: "I give and bequeath unto my four daughters Teresa Thompson, Ann Luckett, Lucy Thompson, and Sally Thompson, each one bed and furniture to them and their heirs forever.  I give unto my wife Sarah Thompson the ? of all the rest and residual of my estate for and during the term of her natural life and after her death to be equally divided between the above mentioned daughters and my son Benedict Thompson."  This substantiates the reference of Virlinda being Teresa's niece (through Ann Luckett)

To round out the Thompson family unit, we have to go back to Teresa’s will, where we see that the other two sisters Lucy and Sally (Sarah) Thompson married a Semmes (Simms) and a Wheeler, although it remains a mystery which married which.

Teresa Milstead’s will continues: “I give and bequeath unto my niece Mary Ann Wheeler the sum of twenty dollars and my trunk Item. I give and bequeath unto my two nieces Clarisa? Wheeler and Mary? Wheeler the sum of Forty dollars, and my ? and all ? furniture, to be equally divided between them Item.  I give and bequeath unto my niece Margery Delosier the wife of John Delosier the sum of twenty dollars. Item.  I give and bequeath unto my two Nephews John Semmes and Charles Semmes after my just debts are paid the residual of my estate for the use and benefit of my Mother Mrs. Thompson & Sister Mrs. Semmes;  And lastly I appoint and Constitute my nephew Charles Semmes"

The 1810 census for Charles County shows Thomas Thompson Jr, with the following household: 1 male 26-44, 2 females 16-26, 3 females under 10, no slaves.

So, the following shows the most like scenario for the relationship of Verlinda Luckett to the Thompsons.  One of Verlinda’s aunts, either Sally or Lucy married a Semmes, probably Charles, since the census records show Charles having sons that were about the right age and match the names of the nephews from Teresa’s will.  That left only one unmarried sister who married a Wheeler.  For convenience I have assigned Lucy to Charles Semmes (Simms) and Sally to the unknown Wheeler, but it may have been the other way around.

Descendants of Thomas Thompson

1.  THOMAS1 THOMPSON1 was born 17522, and died 1815 in Charles County, Maryland.  He married SARAH.  She died in Charles County, Maryland.

Notes for CHARLES SIMMS:

It is just a guess that Charles Simms (Semmes) was married to Lucy Thompson.  It is equally likely that he was married to Lucy's sister Sally.  There is also a small possibility that it was a different Semmes that was married to one of the Thompson sisters.  The other Thompson sister married a Wheeler.
