Notes for Alice Kathleen Cale: [Clarence Milstead's Hugh McCabe Descendants.FTW]
[Ada McAdams.FTW]
She was known as "Cassie" by her parents and sisters because her mothers name was the same as hers.
My mother is a well-loved woman by family and anyone who has the good fortune to know her. She is a loving mother and very generous in giving herself to those around her. She always looks for the "good" in any situation and enjoys helping others.
Her mother was Alice Kathleen Leary, born in Newport, Gwent, S. Wales and her father was Alfred Cale, born in Newport, Gwent, S Wales . She reports that she was born in Newport, South Wales, England and later moved to Llanelli, in Carmarthenshire, Wales. She reports that she had three sisters, Ethel, Anne Cecelia, and Gladys.
She remembers hearing the workers singing as they went to and from work in Wales. Her family was poor and she recalls having to eat turnips from the fields, and remembers the generous neighbors she and her sisters encountered on the long walks to and from school through the rolling hills of Wales.
Following her mothers death, she came to America at age seven to live with her mother's sister, Anne Cecelia (Leary) Niven, and husband Joseph (shipsmith, blacksmith, or wrought- iron worker) in Miami, Florida.
She worked in stenographic work in Miami as a young adult and met my father while he sold Brillo, and Corn Starch Products throughout the southeastern states.
She was active as a poll worker in her voting district, and also worked with the telephone company when called.
As of this writing, she lives with my son John, his wife Regina, and their family just south of Somerville, Tennessee.
Courtesy of Sue Jennings: Alice was the third of the four sisters, born in 1906 in Pontypool. When she was 7 years and 3 months she was allowed to go to the USA with her Aunt Annie Niven. According to her passenger record she sailed on the "Baltic" from Liverpool to Ellis Island in New York, and her date of arrival was 2nd August 1913. Her place of residence was listed as Glanafon, Wales and she was going to live in Miami, Florida.
The following is from Susan Jennings email of June 19, 2001: "...Alice Cale arrived in America - aged 7 - in August 1913. She sailed from Liverpool on the "Baltic" and arrived at Ellis Island. She was described as being fair haired, having a fair complexion, and being a child when it asked for height, and had blue eyes. Her address was entered as Glanafon, Wales..."
