Notes for NATHANIEL HAND:
Thirteen Amagansett men fought in the Revolution. Among them was 2d Lt. Nathaniel Hand, the father of the storekeeper, whose home on the corner of Main Street and Hand Lane was a public house during the war years. Here cadets who were part of the regiment raised for the protection of the livestock from British marauders on Montauk could be convivial; here also relays of horses were kept for messengers. Nathaniel Hand, incidentally, kept five slaves, a large number for a single owner in this area.
In the War Of 1812 young Charles Hand distinguished himself by a Paul Revere-type ride to Sag Harbor, alerting the people along the way to British gunboats stealing up Gardiners Bay.

An old ledger lists 114 pounds of butter for the ship Washington, 229 hams taken aboardthe Noble, and the provisioning of other ships, such as the Fanny and the Hamilton. Besides conventional groceries Hand's varied emporium was stocked with snuff, chewing tobacco, laudanum, tallow, wagon springs, indigo, ochre, gunpowder, gunshot and caps, leather, vitriol, silk, calico, buttons, harness, lamps, hogsheads, wick yarn, suspenders, and pearlash and bunkers for fertilizer (these last sold ten for a penny).
