Descendants of William Kennedy


3. THOMAS2 KENNEDY (WILLIAM1) was born November 29, 1776 in Paisly, Scotland, and died October 18, 1832. He married ROSAMOND HARRIS THOMAS, daughter of WILLIAM THOMAS and AMELIA SELBY. She was born May 10, 1774, and died March 30, 1837.

HOMAS KENNEDY:
Thomas Kennedy came to America in 1777 and settled near the Great Falls of the Potomac River. Reportedly, the first person he saw on leaving the boat was his brother, Matthew.

After his marriage to Rosamond, they moved to Williamsport, MD where he became a leading merchant. His merchandise was shipped to Fort Cumberland on pack horse.

Thomas moved his family several times in the years to come. In 1807, they moved to their farm, "Wooburn", which was five miles from Williamsport. They moved back to "Mount Liberty" at Williamsport in 1809. The Kennedy family moved one mile away in 1812 to "Roslin Castle" and the next year moved to thier farm "Elllerslie".

The Hagerstown "MAIL" was established by Thomas Kennedy in 1828. He served as editor until his death in 1832. His son, Howard, and William Weber then bought it.

Thomas Kennedy was a famous poet and a Maryland State senator and delegate. His poems were often patriotic and one, "Impressed Seaman", was sung on American ships during the War of 1812. He also wrote love sonnets and satirical poems.

In the Maryland legislature, he wrote a bill giving Jews the same rights in voting and owning property. The bill took seven years to pass and became known as "Kennedy's Jew Baby".[Miracle,Kennedy,Bloxom,1.FBK.FTW]
