* John ( Jans ) Vrieling*

Jans Vrieling was born March 15 1871, in Haren Holland. The son of Geritt Vrieling and Fennechien Pieters, He worked as a farm hand in the Netherlands until the late 1890's. At that time John traveled by ship for the United States of America. As Jans had very little money and could not afford to buy a ticket to sail across the ocean to America, he worked as a ship hand. Shortly after Jans arived in America, he changed his name to John. Around the same time he became associated with the Salvation Army, and later became a Salvation Army minister, stationed in several areas throughout the US. In 1902,while John was stationed at Fort Romie, California, he married Margaret Ann Armstrong Grant. John and Margaret served the Salvation together in Fort Romie. John became ill while he was stationed in Fort Romie and resigned his duties with the Salvation Army. John and Maggie the moved their family to Montana and joined with his brothers George, and Lambert, and their families. The three families then moved to Ansterdam., Idaho. In 1916, John moved his family to a small ranch near Stockton, California.
John and Margaret remained active with the Salvation Army as lay ministers until the time of their deaths.
