My father's family has been in North Texas since the 1830's, although my great-grandfather, Isaac Houston Mitchell, did not arrive here from Rhea County, Eastern Tennessee, until 1874. Isaac Houston's father was James Atchley Mitchell of Rhea County, whose father, Charles Mitchell, also of Eastern Tennessee, was a veteran of the War of 1812. Isaac Houston Mitchell also claimed to be the 2nd cousin of Peter Turney, who was governor of the state of Tennessee in the 1890s. |
