8. Various records and documents indicate different spellings of his given name, including "Elhanen", "Elkanah" or "Ethannis".

9. According to Walter W. Morgan (interview on 15 Nov 1999), Elhanan went to work tanning hides for Cyrus Barlow in Bartholomew (probably Columbus), Indiana. While working there, he met Mr. Barlow's daughter, Mary Jane. After their marriage, they moved to Texas for several years and then moved back to Indiana.

10. According to Walter W. Morgan (interview on 22 Nov 1999), Elhanan never talked to his wife about his family in Monroe County, Indiana. After their marriage, they took a riverboat down the river to New Orleans and then went overland to Texas (possibly Dallas). According to Mr. Morgan, Elhanan and Mary Jane lived in Dallas County, Texas, not Houston. Their first son (Oliver) was born there. They returned to Indiana and Elhanan enlisted in the Civil War a few months after his second son was born. Elhanan was a "jack of all trades, but master of none". According to Mr. Morgan, Elhanan was a draftsman (he has a set of drafting pens used by Elhanan which were manufactured by Dollond in London, England) and a carver (he has a steer horn that was engraved by Elhanan). He was also a tanner, working for his father-in-law.

11. Sometime while in Indiana, Elhanan became a member of the Masons. According to family history, he became a 33 degree Mason. His hand painted Masons apron is in possession of Walter Morgan. Walter Morgan also is in possession of a copy of Macoy's Masonic Manual which is inscribed "Elhanan W. Moberly, on the Mississippi River, Nov., 1854"

12 Mary Jane Barlow (Moberly)(Tevis) and her husband (Isaiah Tevis) filed for a pension related to Elhanan Moberly on 29 Apr 1887 (C-9631) (source: Index to Mexican War Pension Applications by Barbara S. Wolfe, P. 229). The outcome of the application is unknown.
