Notes for PHOEBE FLACK: FROM NOTES FROM WILLIAM H. FLACK: Phoebe was born 1805 and married Percy Hosbrook in 183_? 1835 Ohio Tax List - Moses Flack of Cincinnati. Also on this list in one "Perry" Hosbrook of Columbia Township, Hamilton Co. This must be our Percy, but someone misinterpreted the handwriting. 1830's (Dates unknown) - Percy Hosbrook served as one of the Trustees for Columbia Township. (Ref.: "History of Hamilton County, Ohio", by Ford, page 276). It is interesting to note that several men of the Hosbrook family were surveyors and civil engineers, generation after generation. 1844-45 - The Percy Hosbrook family and Moses Flack and his children moved to the Indianapolis area in Indiana. Surely, Phoebe Hosbrook helped now to take care of her motherless nephews (Moses Flacks children). 1850 Federal Census - Marion County, Indiana, Page 308 Wayne Township: Percy and Phebe Hosbrook have in their household: John Hosbrook (b. 1836 Ohio) - I think the informer was not correct and that this John may have been John Flack (b. 1838 Ohio), as he wasn't listed in the Flack household. Also, it looks as if Phebe took in two homeless girls, to care for, and Benjamin Brown, in their home, probably worked with Percy in his surveying business. 1860 Federal Census - Wayne Township, Marion County, Indiana, p. 685: Percy and Phebe Hosbrook have all three of Moses Flack's sons (Hosbrook nephews) living with them. It is probable that the Hosbrooks never had any children of their own. Note from Jean Mohler: They had no children and are buried in Crown Hill Cemetery in the Flack plot in Indianapolis, Indiana. Information from Henry Ranck stated: "John and Joseph Flack were sent from their home in Virginia? to live with Uncle Percy and Aunt Phoebe Hosbrook. They owned a farm in Marion County, now Indianapolis, Indiana. This was just before the Civil War and at a time when young men of wealthy families could be kept out of the army by paying a certain amount of money. John and Joseph were educated by Uncle Percy, who was a teacher, lawyer and surveyor. He laid out the town of Clermont, Indiana. For many years we had his surveying tools." E-mail information from Bill Flack (who got from a genealogist in Cincinnati) March 30, 2000: Flack, Phebe W. & Samuel Duvall md. 18 AUG 1822 (Clermont County, OH marriage index 1800 - 1850 Hosbrook, Percy & Duval, Phebe md. 04 JUN 1836 (Restored Hamilton County Marriage Records 1808 - 1849) ) Percy Hosbrook & Phoebe Flack md 18 JUN 1837 |
