Notes for R
OBERT FLACK:
On July 26, 1806, Robert Flack purchased property in Franklin County, Indiana and soon moved his family there.
1820 Census: Households of Robert and son, John. 1821 - their properties were part of the new Union County, Indiana.

      Notes from William H. Flack:

Robert Flack born c. 1750 - 60, Pennsylvania? (Age is figured from the 1830 Census record showing him to be 70 - 80 years).
Nov. 13, 1794 - Marriage of Robert Flack and Huldy Leonard by Rev. John Smith (Baptist) in Columbia Twp., Hamilton, Co., Ohio in Madisonville ME Church. (Ref.: "A Collection of Pioneer Marriage Records, Hamilton County, Ohio, 1789 - 1817" by Marjorie Byrnside Burress; p. 23).
April 1, 1795 - Robert Flack bought 160 acres from John Cleves Symmes in Section 17, Town 4, Fractional Range 2, in the Miami Purchase; (Columbia Twp., Hamilton Co., Ohio). (Ref.: Hamilton Co. Recorder's Office, Deed Book B-2, pages 145-146.) This land was to the northwest of the village of Madisonville: (farm in southwest quarter of Sect. 17)
August 22, 1796 Robert Flack was a taxpayer in Columbia Twp., also Jesse Leonard (probably Hulda's father. This list shows that David Leonard, a single man, was living in the household of Robert Flack).
Sometime between April 1795 and January 1798 - Robert Flack sold 40 acres to Jeseph Ward. (Deed not found.) (Ref: Deed of sale in 1806, given below.)
(6 Feb. 1797 - Jesse Leonard purchased NE quarter of Sect. 17)
1st Feb. 1798 - Mortgage of Robert Flack's property to Samuel Dick. This debt was later paid off, as Flack did not lose his farm. (Ref: Deed Book B-1, pp. 83-84.)
1801 - Robert became a member of the Columbia Baptist Church, but his wife is not listed.
May 3, 1802 - The Columbia Township Trustees sold Thomas McCormick, a poor man, to Robert Flack for $52 for one year, -- Flack being the "lowest bidder". (Ref.: "History of Hamilton Co., Ohio" by Ford, page 267.) The method of taking care of local poor people, in those days, was for someone to contribute to their welfare. (Why didn't the Trustees choose the highest bidder???)
July 26, 1806 - At the Cincinnati Land Office, Robert Flack (of Hamilton Co.) purchased land in Franklin County, Indiana; (Range 1, Town 10, Section 5). (Ref.: "Early Ohio Settlers" by Ellen and David Berry, page 105).

2 females, 10-15 yrs. (b. 1805-10) Census of 1850-1860 do not agree, if 1850 is correct, Pheobe was b.c. 1806.

Robert and Hulda are buried in New Hope Cemetery outside of Liberty Indiana

E-mail note from Bill Flack on July 11, 1999 and needs further research. I am including it here to help anyone else looking into this Flack line. "We accessed the Morman file recently and got the following, maybe correct maybe not: Robert b. 1743 in PA; son, Moses b. 1763 in Hamilton County, Ohio. Moses m. Rachel Kitchel in 1804 Hamilton, Ohio. Children: Phoebe 1805 - 1879; Robert 1807; Moses 1812 - 1849. Rachel is the daughter of Moses Kitchel and Phoebe Hedges. I am assuming that Robert is the father of Moses senior.....This may be (the 2 Roberts and 2 Moseses) part of the confusion with the information Ingrid Fabian was referring to.....A Morman Irish specialist explained that the Flacks were originally lowland scots who emigrated to Ireland and the US and became Scotch-Irish."

Children of R
OBERT FLACK and HULDA LEONARD are:
2. i.   JOHN2 FLACK, b. Abt. 1796, Franklin Co., Indiana; d. Unknown.
3. ii.   DAVID FLACK, b. Abt. 1800, Hamilton Co., Ohio; d. Unknown.
iii.   PHOEBE FLACK (Source: William Flack.), b. October 22, 1805, Hamilton Co. Ohio; d. December 31, 1879, Wayne Township, Marion Co., Indiana; m. (1) ROBERT DUVALL (Source: Andrew Flack.), Bef. 1830; d. Unknown; m. (2) PERCY HOSBROOK, Abt. 1830, Hamilton Co., Ohio; b. February 14, 1811, Ohio; d. July 14, 1890, Wayne Township, Marion Co., Indiana.
  Notes for PHOEBE FLACK:
FROM NOTES FROM WILLIAM H. FLACK:
Phoebe was born 1805 and married Percy Hosbrook in 183_?
1835 Ohio Tax List - Moses Flack of Cincinnati. Also on this list in one "Perry" Hosbrook of Columbia Township, Hamilton Co. This must be our Percy, but someone misinterpreted the handwriting.
1830's (Dates unknown) - Percy Hosbrook served as one of the Trustees for Columbia Township. (Ref.: "History of Hamilton County, Ohio", by Ford, page 276). It is interesting to note that several men of the Hosbrook family were surveyors and civil engineers, generation after generation.
1844-45 - The Percy Hosbrook family and Moses Flack and his children moved to the Indianapolis area in Indiana. Surely, Phoebe Hosbrook helped now to take care of her motherless nephews (Moses Flacks children).
1850 Federal Census - Marion County, Indiana, Page 308 Wayne Township:
Percy and Phebe Hosbrook have in their household: John Hosbrook (b. 1836 Ohio) - I think the informer was not correct and that this John may have been John Flack (b. 1838 Ohio), as he wasn't listed in the Flack household. Also, it looks as if Phebe took in two homeless girls, to care for, and Benjamin Brown, in their home, probably worked with Percy in his surveying business.
1860 Federal Census - Wayne Township, Marion County, Indiana, p. 685:
Percy and Phebe Hosbrook have all three of Moses Flack's sons (Hosbrook nephews) living with them. It is probable that the Hosbrooks never had any children of their own.

Note from Jean Mohler: They had no children and are buried in Crown Hill Cemetery in the Flack plot in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Information from Henry Ranck stated: "John and Joseph Flack were sent from their home in Virginia? to live with Uncle Percy and Aunt Phoebe Hosbrook. They owned a farm in Marion County, now Indianapolis, Indiana. This was just before the Civil War and at a time when young men of wealthy families could be kept out of the army by paying a certain amount of money. John and Joseph were educated by Uncle Percy, who was a teacher, lawyer and surveyor. He laid out the town of Clermont, Indiana. For many years we had his surveying tools."

E-mail information from Bill Flack (who got from a genealogist in Cincinnati) March 30, 2000:       Flack, Phebe W. & Samuel Duvall md. 18 AUG 1822 (Clermont County, OH marriage index 1800 - 1850
Hosbrook, Percy & Duval, Phebe md. 04 JUN 1836 (Restored Hamilton County Marriage Records 1808 - 1849) )
Percy Hosbrook & Phoebe Flack md 18 JUN 1837

iv.   GIRL FLACK (Source: William Flack.), b. Abt. 1809, Franklin Co., Indiana; d. Unknown; m. UNKNOWN, Abt. 1827, Union County, Indiana? (Source: William Flack.); d. Unknown.
  Notes for GIRL FLACK:
Married in 1827 - 29 in Union County, Indiana?

4. v.   MOSES FLACK, b. August 01, 1811, Clermont County, Ohio; d. May 31, 1849, Indianapolis, Marion Co., Indiana.
