* Mommsen-Cornils: Originating in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany*

Updated February 8, 2003

I am researching the MOMMSEN-CORNILS family which originated in the Schleswig-Holstein area of Germany in the 1700 - 1800s.

Am especially trying to locate descendants or information regarding CHRISTIAN MOMMSEN (b. 1834 in Tetenbull) who immigrated to Barron County, Wisconsin in 1883. His brother, JACOB MOMMSEN, traveled with Christian aboard the SS Australia, leaving Hamburg around May 1, 1883 and arriving in New York two weeks later. Both Christian and Jacob bought land in Barron County, Wisconsin in 1892.

Both Jacob and Christian spelled their surname in various ways, even after emigrating: MOMMSEN, MOMSEN, MUMMSEN and MUMSEN.

The parents of Christian and Jacob were JACOB MUMSEN/MOMMSEN (02/26/1805 - 11/22/1858) and SOPHIA DOROTHEA JACOBS (03/03/1816 - 1909), both of Tetenbull.

1700-1800 related surnames include: ASMUS, CLASEN, DIRCKSEN, TRALAU, DIRCKSEN, FRIEDRICKS, HAYSEN, JENNS (JACOBS), LORENZ, RONNEBECK, and SIEVERS (SIEVERT, SIEWERT).
