He married MARY DALTON/PARKHURST Abt. 1639 in Watertown, Massachusetts, daughter of GEORGE PARKHURST and PHOEBE. She was born August 28, 1614 in Ipswich, Suffolk Co., England, and died March 28, 1687 in Woburn, Massachusetts.

Notes for R
EV. THOMAS CARTER:

Thomas was believed to have been a graduate of Cambridge University in England in 1633. (From "The New England Historical & Genealogical Register vol. 100 - 1946)

Descendants of Rev. Thomas Carter, bearing his name, were formerly very numerous, particularly in Wilmington, and in "Carter Row", so called, Burlington. And though, in the towns just mentioned, their number is now considerably diminished, they have not yet become extinct. (From "History of Woburn" by Sewall pg.597)

Rev. Thomas became the first minister of the church of Woburn, ordained November 22, 1642. Sold land in Cambridge August 18, 1643. Was a much honored pastor, doing much to shape the character of the growing town. He deeded lands to his children before his death; referred to this in nunc. will, prob. September 4, 1684. Bequeathed library to his eldest son Samuel; rest to be divided between his three sons and his daughter Mary after the death of his wife. The children of my brother Thomas Carter, who is now in New England, are mentioned in the will of James Carter of Hinderclay, Suffolk, England September 8, 1655 [Reg. XXXVI, 319]. (From "Pioneers of Massachusetts" by Pope pg. 90)

The Carter family has also borne arms. The motto of the Carter family is: "Sub libertate quietem" - Under liberty, peace.

Thomas was born during the reign of James I, presumably in Hertfordshire, at or near St. Albans. He without doubt was the grandson or great-grandson of Richard Carter, Lord of the Manor of Garston, in the parish of Waterford, England. The Rev. Thomas Carter entered St. John's College University of Cambridge, England, April 1, 1626, and there took the degree of Bachelor of Arts in 1629-30, and the Master's degree in 1633. April 2, 1635, he embarked from St. Albans in the ship "Planter," bound for New England. He was obliged to take the disguise of a servant to one George Giddings, for the English government had at that period become so alarmed at the utter contempt of the colonists for the laws and authority of the Crown, that restraints were placed upon emigration to the colonies, and no one above the rank of serving man was permitted to remove without special leave, and persons of inferior rank were required to take the oath of supremacy and allegiance. Hence, because of the great difficulty of one of the Rev. Thomas Carter's education and position to obtain permission to emigrate, he adopted the disguise mentioned. He took a farm and homestall of 102 acres in Watertown, Massachusetts, and there married Mary Dalton. He was admitted freeman on March 9, 1637. Thomas was ordained November 22, 1642, and an account of his ordination as the first minister in Woburn is given in the "History of New England," by Governor John Winthrop, Esq., first governor of Massachusetts. He continued in the pastorate forty-two years, during which long period the greatest harmony existed between himself and the society. In Sewall's "History of Woburn" he is said to have been a pious, exemplary man, an able and sound preacher of the gospel, and one whom God honored and prospered in his work. Under his ministrations the church was greatly enlarged and built up, the town flourished and was for the most part in peace.
