While he was a true American, he was opposed to bearing arms against his fellowman on account of his firm belief in the Tenets of the Society Friends, for which reason alone he was not enrolled as a Soldier in the Army of the Revolution. "Not so, however, with his only Brother, who was shot down as he stood on picket duty in the war for Independence. My Grandfather's name was Moses Goodin. He was born about the year 1735-6-or 7 and being of a robust constitution and of very temperate habits, he lived to the advanced age of nearly 95. His occupation was mainly that of a farmer, though he was a cooper by trade. In swinging the scythe in a meadow or the cradle in a wheat field he had no equal. "I have frequently heard my father say that when he was 75 years old, he has often known him to cradle wheat all day with men in the very prime of life, who were utterly unable to discount him in the quantity or quality of their work. "When he was over 90 years of age, he spent some months at my father's, and he and father would frequently walk 4 miles to meeting on the Lord's Day, and father, who was not more than 45 years old, could not walk faster or stand the walk better than he. "The writer was contemporaneous with his Grandfather about 11 or 12 years, and could give a great many reminiscences from his own recollection and others from hearsay, if time and space would permit. The following must suffice. "In those early days, wild game such as deer and bears and other smaller game being plenty, most men were what was called "good marksmen;" but Grandfather, during his last stay at father's, which was (as stated before) when he was over 90 years of age, was seldom equalled and never surpassed. It is said of him that he would, after mowing all day, take his gun and watch for deer at a certain "lick," kill one, sleep a few hours, go again in the morning before day, and watch for and kill another, and call on one or more of his sons to help bring it in, then eat his breakfast and go again 3 or 4 miles to do his day's mowing. "And these things were of frequent occurence. It is said of him that he was never known to drink more than a half pint of water at a time, though never so thirsty. "He was a man about 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high with short lower limbs, long body, and very muscular arms, and every muscle developed so as to be susceptible of the greatest possible endurance. His weight was about 165 pounds. He was twice married, and was the father of 10 children, 5 sons and 5 daughters, all of them by his first wife, and all lived to marry and raise families. "The names of his sons were David, Moses, Smith, Asa, and Samuel. The names of his daughters were (I give the names by which they were familiarly known in my boyhood days) Phebe, Betsy, Sally, Jane, and Polly. "When the writer knew them personally, they all, except Phebe and David, lived, and most of them died in Perry County, Ohio. My father, whose name was Asa, died in Indiana, near Montpelier. Uncle David died in Kentucky, and Aunt Phebe died in Pennsylvania. All, or nearly all of them, were born in Pennsylvania."----- Children of MOSES GOODIN and JUNE HULL are: i. POLLY2 GOODIN. ii. Notes for DAVID GOODIN: BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES: PLEASANT TOWNSHIP Text taken from the website: http://heritagepursuit.com/HarPleasant.htm "DAVID GOODIN, retired hotel-keeper, Kenton, was born in Somerset County Penn., May 31, 1805, and is the only living son of Smith and Nancy (Skinner) Goodin. His parents were natives of Pennsylvania, whence they emigrated, settling near Somerset, Perry Co., Ohio, in 1808. Smith Goodin was among the early pioneers of that county, where he died in the forty-seventh years of his age. The widow and her children, three sons and two daughters, came to Hardin County in January, 1830, and David Goodin succeeded John W. Williams in a hotel standing on the site now occupied by Bans Block, known as the Goodin Block, in Kenton. Here our subject was engaged as hotel proprietor for fifteen years, being among the first that started in this section. He afterward turned the hotel into business rooms, which were destroyed by fire in 1856, subsequent to which he erected the present structure. For the past thirty years, he has lived a quiet and unostentatious life, attending to the landed estates in this county and in Iowa, where he had a large tract of land. He was one of the founders of the Kenton Savings Bank, of which he was, for some years, one of the directors, still retaining an interest in the institution. He was elected Associate Judge in 1840, serving for seven years to the satisfaction of his constituents. "He also served in the City Council several terms, and has always taken an active interest in the public welfare of his county. Judge Goodin was joined in marriage in Somerset, Ohio, in December, 1825 to Miss Sarah Kishler, a daughter of John Kishler and a native of Pennsylvania, where her family were pioneers of Mifflin County. This union has resulted in ten children, five living, viz. : Alfred, resident of Nevada, Iowa; Elizabeth, widow of William Stanley, and resident of Des Moines City, Iowa; Isabel B., wife of Dr. John Dimmett, residing in Laramie, Wyoming; Mary J., widow of Charles Peet, residing with her parents on the homestead; and David E., at home."----- ===================================================================== 5. Notes for SAMUEL SKINNER: The following letters were written by Samuel Skinner, brother of Rhoda (Skinner) Black. With their parents, George and Mary (Goodin) Skinner and family, they came to Washington Township, Sandusky County, Ohio in 1830 from Perry County, Ohio. They were of Scottish descent. Samuel Skinner was born in 1814 and died in Fremont in 1902. He was the father of one son, George Washington (Wash) Skinner and nine daughters. Copied as written, by Marilyn (Snyder) Ziegman, 628 W. North St., Fostoria,OH 44830 Fremont, Sept.10, 1893 I have often thought of writing something of my life for my children to read when I am gone, which will not be very long anymore. Soon will be 80 years old. I was born in Perry County, Ohio May 10, 1814. Came to this county April 10, 1830. Soon will be 60 years ago. It was truly a black swamp then, there was but three (3) families then living in Washington township when we settled in it. Not one laid-out road in it. I helped to cut the first one, which was the Rollersville Road. The township was not named and not till 1831. Quite a strife what it should be called. Many wanted it called Perry as a good many had settled in it from Perry County. Well, I had formed with the young people where I came from and it did seem to me I could not stay here. Could see nobody, nothing but the big woods and wild animals - they was very plenty. I have killed wagon loads of deer. If I had a little money I certainly would not staid here. Should have run away from my father's home. But having no money kept me here. My Mother died one year after arriving here; left Father and me, George, Aaron, Nathan and Mary Ann, a little girl. We done the best we knew how to keep house. But it wasn't very pleasant for at least, then Father married again. (Sally Johnson in 1833) Two more boys in the family. That made it worse if possible. I then went to the Portage River to work at 8 dollars per month where Elmore is now. I put over many lonesome days. I was then about 18 years old. In the fall of 1833 on the 17th day of October I married Elizabeth Geeseman. About 10 days later moved in a log cabin we built inside of 10 days on the go acre lot that Tom Hufford now owns. There had not been a tree cut on it unless it might of been a coon or (?) tree. It was a very wet lot; at times it was near all under water. When we began to keep house we was very poor indeed. I think if everything we had would not brought 50 dollars. The house was 16" x 18" clapboard. Roof held down by waited poles, floor of split puncheon, door of same material Board holes in the wall and put poles in for bedstead. Basswood bark for cord. Don't think there was 1/2 pound of nails used in the house. Cut a hole in the walls, tacked strips across and pasted grease paper on it for window. We had no chairs in the house for 2 year. Used stools made out of split basswood No saw mills; could not get lumber If we even had the money. Sept.11, 1893 The wild animals were deer, wild turkey, wolves, wildcat, coon, opossum and porcupine. Many a night I got up and shot off the gun to drive the wolves away. But never killed one. We went to work was both of us well and hearty. Cleared off a patch that winter for corn and potatoes. In the spring, planted it Growed nice until the June flood came. Everything drowned out We saw hard times indeed. We often had no bread for days at a time We sifted bran and made bread of that. At times lived on corn bread and wild meat mostly. I had to work from home 1/2 of the time and go to the river to get work about 6 miles. Got 50 cents per day. Got one bushel of corn for a day's work. We used corn bread mostly. Knowing what 1 do now and was young again I would not take a section of land there as a gift and go through the same hardships. You may think that strange to look at things as they are now. But it seemed all rite we did not no anny better. We worked with a will. The next July, Wash was born. Then we had something to amuse ourselves with. Our family increased fast. Soon had a family of 10 children and it makes my heart ache to think back how they was raised compared to the way children are raised now They went barefoot 8 months in the year and dotes very scanty indeed. Dec.14, 1893 Since writing the above, I have had a hard attack of kidney trouble. Think I will never get over it. Am much better than I was. In looking over some papers today I found a letter from my Uncle Samuel Goodin dated 1854. it made me think of my old relatives that have passed away. Not one uncle left. I feel that my time is short here; will have to leave you all and also the property that we worked so hard for. Hope you all will use it to good advantage whatever may be left You children are scattered over a large territory. Been looking for some of you to come and see us for some time. Got a card from Wash today saying Em and Ann would be here next week, so will have to wait another week. So goes the time, one week after another. The reunion we had last fall done us a great favor. Wish it could be repeated. But that can't hardly be. December 14, 1893 Your Mother died March the 8th 1863. Some over one year, married the widow Guyer (Sarah Guyer in 1870) of Grand Rapids, Wood County, Ohio. Since then have seen many cloudy days with some sun shine. Now I don't know what further to say. if I had the education that many have I could write much more. I am feeling pretty well but still have the disease working on me. Am so light headed many times most fall down. Am much like my brother, David was. My six sisters are dead and two brothers out of twelve of us. I may write more hereafter. Signed, Samuel Skinner December, last day of the year '93 It is dark and I am alone. Sarah went West to see her girls. I feel real lonesome. Once there was a large family; now it seems I must stay alone. Think myself I had not ought to taking my age m consideration and the disease I have. Don't sleep so well have frequently to get up 6 to 9 times a night. You children are far away, most of you and you all have families and home to look after. I don't want to find any fault. You all done what you could for me to make it pleasant for me. I have to much to do and look after the condition I am in. Don't know what to do for the best. We went to Jane's Christmas to a fine turkey roast. It weighed 18 pounds. We had a good first rate dinner. We all enjoyed it. Now I am all alone. Good night. I may not behold another day. Signed, Samuel Skinner Saturday, May the 5th, '94 I am still alive for which I am thankful. I am very much aflicted with rheumatism as I suppose it is, otherwise am pretty well. About 50 years ago I was on jury to try Mr. Sperry for murdering his wife. It commenced Monday morning. Saturday at noon we got the charge from the judge. We stood 6 to 6 till Sunday about 9 o'clock we called the Judge to give this charge over on certain points.. Went back to our room and soon agreed; found him guilty of murder in the first degree. All circumstancial evidence. Mr. Rose and I were the last to agree to it. He was sentenced to be hung on Sunday. Before he was to hang his children was brought in to see him. He managed to get a small pocket knife of his little boy. After they left he opened the large blood vessel in his arm and bled to death. That was the last of him. Well, now I am the only one living that had anything to do with the trial. Judge Bowen lived at Merion been dead many years. Dr. Rawson was Clerk of theCourt, he is dead some years. John Strole was sheriff and Peter Burgoon Deputy. Both gone. Cooper R. Watson, Homer Everett, Bish Eddy and W.W. Culver was the lawyers. They to are dead. I have forgotten some of the jurymen names. Michael Overmire was one. Joseph Reed, James Rose, Henry Havens, Mr. Sandford and myself. That is all I can remember. But they are all gone. Not one left but me that had anything to do with the trial. How strange I never would like to try another such a case. I just thought it might be interesting to you to read. I don't remember the year. Think about 50 years ago. (1842) Now something else. I came here in the spring of '30 and they is but five male persons here now that was here when I tame and they was little boys then. But Dr. Beugrand, he was my age, 16. Wm. Herbster, Wm. Tyler, D.H. Roberts, Bill and Dr. Beugrand, that makes the five. In five days more I will be 80 years Old. I feel that my rase is most run but willing to live longer; Imay write more here after but life is uncertain and death is certain I have strange simptoms of becoming paralized that comes very sudden. So I may never write anymore. I bid you all farewell. Signed, Samuel Skinner October the 17,1898 65 years ago today I was married the first time. Don't seem half that long. Think I have suffered more this summer than all my life before and still a great suifferer yet in mind as well as bodily suffering. Don't know what we will do. Both so aflicted I dreamed the other night I was going south east to our old cabin. There was Jane trying to clear a patch for corn next spring. Those things trouble me to think how you children was raised compared to the way they are now. Signed, Samuel Skinner Sept. the 4th, 1901 Since writing the above have suffered terrible with kidney trouble. We are not living as I should like. The children have homes, can't leave to make it pleasant for us. They are far away. Don't see them often. Think they might come oftener. I learned our President died last night. I feel that I must soon follow and leave all things here. Solom thought wish I could see all once more. Try and prepare for the end. Samuel Skinner ix. Notes for JOEL KISHLER GOODIN: FRANKLIN CO., KANSAS - BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES Text taken from the website at: http://www.ukans.edu/carrie/kancoll/books/cutler/franklin/franklin-co-p7.html "JOEL KISHLER GOODIN, son of John and Elizabeth (Kishler) Goodin, of Ohio, was born in Perry County, Ohio, February 24, 1824. His father, who was of Scotch-English descent, and a man of much ability, died at his home in Kenton, Hardin Co., Ohio, January 20, 1877, aged seventy-seven years. His mother, a prominent and esteemed member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, died in Kenton in 1858, leaving seven children. Joel, the eldest of the family, was educated in the common schools of Tiffin, Seneca Co., Ohio, supplemented by a course of study at the Norwalk Seminary, and the Columbus Academic and Collegiate Institute, both in Ohio. His attention while in school was more especially devoted to scientific and business branches, his vacations being occupied as clerk in mercantile business. When he was twenty-three he took charge of the settlement of the mercantile business of his father, the latter having sold out his store. He also commenced the study of law in the office of Bradley Champ, in Kenton, with whom he subsequently formed a partnership in real estate and brokerage business, which continued about three years. He was admitted to the practice of law by the Supreme Court of Ohio, February 28, 1834, having previously been in mercantile business at Kenton, Ohio, about two years, and for a short time on a farm. He was married at Bucyrus, Crawford Co., Ohio, January 8, 1846 to Miss Elizabeth Christ, who later was one of the honored pioneer women of Kansas, and who died in Cincinnati, Ohio, May 21, 1870, at the age of forty-six years, leaving two sons--Charles W., and John F. C. On May 16, 1854, Mr. Goodwin sic with his wife and two children started for Kansas, and on the 16th of August, 1854, settled on the Wakarusa, four miles southwest of the present site of Lawrence, where he lived with his family through the troublous and exciting years of territorial strife, and was known at home and abroad as a staunch and reliable Free-state man, and an open, outspoken friend to the cause. He was appointed by Governor Reeder as the first Justice of the Peace in Kansas Territory; was one of the Free-state candidates for the first Territorial Council, and delegate or officer in nearly every Free-state Convention held in the Territory. He was Clerk of the House of Representatives under the Topeka Constitution when the Legislature was dissolved by Colonel Sumner, July 4, 1856, Clerk of Territorial Council in 1857, and Auditor of State in 1858. In the latter year he opened an office as an attorney in Douglas County and subsequently removed to Ottawa, Franklin County, where he is still engaged in the practice of his profession. He was elected Kansas State Representative in 1866, and re-elected to same position in 1867. His present wife was Mrs. Catherine A. Coffin, nee Taylor, of Baldwin City, and daughter of Rev. Nathan Taylor, formerly president of Baker University. Mr. Goodwin sic is a member of the I. O. O. F., and has passed all the chairs in Subordinate Lodge and Encampment; was a charter member of Grand Lodge of Kansas, and has been a representative to the body several times. GOODIN, an early lawyer and legislator and a free-state leader, was born at Somerset, Perry County, Ohio, February 24, 1824. He received an academic education, after which he took up the study of law. Early in 1854 he was admitted to the bar in his native state and the following June located upon the Wakarusa River in what is now Douglas County, Kansas. Mr. Goodin was a delegate to the Big Springs convention; was clerk of the lower house of the Topeka Legislature until it was dispersed by Colonel Sumner; was secretary of the council in the free-state Legislature of 1858, and the same year began the practice of law in Douglas County, but soon afterward removed to Ottawa. In 1866 he was elected to represent Franklin County in the Legislature, and was re-elected in 1867. While a member of the House he assisted in organizing the State School for the Deaf at Olathe. In the fall of 1856 he was elected sheriff of Blackford county and served four years. In 1861, President Lincoln appointed him post master at Hartford City, the county seat of Blackford county. In 1861 he enlisted in the 34th Indiana Infantry and was made first lieutenant of Co. I. While in camp in Kentucky, his health failed and he resigned and came home. He was at once appointed Provost Marshall, which office together with the post office he held until the fall of 1864, when he moved to Iowa county, Iowa. In 1867 he was elected county judge of Iowa county, serving two years in that position. In 1869 he moved to Saline county, Nebraska and took a homestead. The services were conducted under the auspices of the G. A. R. Post of which comrade Goodin was a charter member. The remains were followed to Riverside by a large concourse of people who had known the deceased for many years. The grave was beautifully banked with American flags, and as the casket was tenderly lower to its silent home every one felt that Father Goodin was "at rest", and if there is such a thing as a commingling of departed spirits, he was already enjoying a happy reunion with his life companion for 53 years, and who died on the 16th of April 1891. He was a faithful husband, an indulgent father, and ememplary (transcriber note: this is spelling published in paper) citizen and a true friend of humanity. He will be missed and mourned by old and young. And yet, having filled out the full measure of an active and useful life, having gone to join his many friends in the great beyond, who would call him back if they had the power. His two sons Letson and Charles and his four daughters, Mrs. Riddle, Mrs. J. W. Rhine, Mrs. Isaac Rhine, Mrs John Townsend, with many grandchildren and some great grand children were present at the funeral, and all have the satisfaction of knowing that he had every care and attention that could be bestowed upon him, during his short illness, and that he had the highest respect and admiration of every man, woman and child who so fortunate as to have his acquaintance. Although gone from our sight, his life will be held up as an example for all and the influence of his upright life and his pure character will be as a benediction upon the children of man. She married JEHU BROOKE JONES, JR. 18 Mar 1845 in Perry Co., OH2, son of JEHU JONES and JANE KILPATRICK. Notes for JEHU BROOKE JONES, JR.: Text taken from: "HISTORY OF PERRY COUNTY, BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES, SURNAMES BEGINNING WITH 'J'" Transcribed by: Timothy E. Fisher JONES, JEHU B., was born in 1813, in Somerset county, Pennsylvania, and was but two years old when his parents, Jehu Jones, Sr., and Jane (Kilpatrick), settled on the farm now held by the heirs of S. C. Dick. This farm had then about fifteen acres partly cleared; here these pioneers lived until 1844, when mother Jones, and, ten years later, father Jones, were called to rest. The sons, who grew to manhood, are: David, who married Miss Jane Pugh, and who died in Pike township, leaving three sons and two daughters; John, who lives in Warren county, Illinois, and who married Miss Elizabeth Rush, having five sons and four daughters; Jehu B., who married Miss Rebecca Goodin, March, 1846, and still resides on the farm adjoining the ancestral homestead---his wife died in 1866,leaving two sons; David, who resides in Blackford county, Indiana, and who is married to Miss Addie Shull, now the mother of two daughters, and George M., who is single, and remains with his father. There are two daughters, Phidelia, the wife of Charles Stickel, a successful tanner and currier, near Somerset, blessed with four sons and one daughter, and Miss Mary, who shares with her brother, George, and her father, the comforts and the cares of the homestead. Jehu B. Jones is worthy of the beautiful home he enjoys, and the broad acres he has transformed from a forest waste to fruitful fields. He has held several offices of trust and profit in his township, and never yet was a candidate when he did not show strength beyond the lines of his party. True to his convictions of right and duty he has not always remained loyal to party, but while acting within party lines, no man is more faithful to his ticket, or more zealous for the right. He possesses brave impulses, is true to his friends, generous to his foes, benevolent to the poor, sympathizes with the suffering and hates the oppressor, while he defends the victim.----- More About JEHU BROOKE JONES, JR.: Fact 1: 1850 Census - Perry Co., OH in Reading Twp., Somerset Fact 2: 1860 Census - Perry Co., OH in Reading Twp., Somerset Fact 3: 1870 Census - Perry Co., OH in Somerset Fact 4: 1880 Census - Perry Co., OH in Reading Twp., Somerset Fact 5: 18 Mar 1845, Marriage Record, Marr. to Rebecca GOODIN Fact 6: 19 Aug 1864, Perry County Weekly - Running for Sheriff on the National Union ticket with Fact 7: Abraham Lincoln & Andrew Johnson Fact 8: 20 May 1900, Death Record of Perry Co., OH, Reading Twp., Somerset Children of REBECCA GOODIN and JEHU JONES are: 36. i. Mr. Goodin has been twice married, taking for his first wife Miss Nancy Twibell, in October, 1860. She was born in Blackford County, Indiana, a daughter of David and Margaret Twibell. She died in February, 1872. Five children were born to this union-Madison, Elizabeth (wife of T. J. McGrath), Nettie, Ella and one who died in infancy. Mr. Goodin was married a second time, November 13, 1873, to Miss Ollie Ashbaugh, a native of Logan County, Ohio, and daughter of Andrew and Martha Ashbaugh, the father dying in Logan County, and the mother in Wells County, Indiana. One son, named James Lawrence, has been born to this union. Since 1872 Mr. Goodin has been engaged quite extensively in dealing in and raising stock in connection with his general farming. In politics he affiliates with the Democratic party. In the spring of 1865 he was elected justice of the peace of Chester Township, which office he filled for four years, and in 1869 he was elected trustee of Chester Township, serving in that capacity until the fall of 1872. In the fall of 1873 he was elected and served as county commissioner for three years, and in all of these offices he served with credit to himself and to the best interests of his township or county. He is a member of Montpelier Lodge, No. 288, A. F. & A. M., and also belongs to Five Points Grange, No. 522, Patrons of Husbandry, and is at present serving as master of the grange."----- =============================================== Piecing together some more Indiana info. I think that Elizabeth's husband may have been T. J. McGeath. Also there was a John Twibell in Blackford County who had a son named Thomas. I will look that up and see if I can make a connection. But as you know Isaac and Fanny went to Blackford county. I think his brother Smith located around Montpellier, Blackford County also. Lastly, has anybody done any research in Somerset Co., PA? Maybe it was always assumed Somerset Co., OH. I once found an Isaac Goodin in the tax records there. But couldn't make any connection. I will have to go through my stuff and find it. They settled on a farm near Zanesville, where he lived till manhood, and was given a good common school education. When he was twenty years of age he began to teach, and taught continuously for five years. During this time he studied medicine under the preceptorship of Dr. P. J. Greene, of Mt. Pleasant, Ohio, studying with him three years. He took his primary course of lectures at the Eclectic Medical Institute in Cincinnati, Ohio, in the winter of 1862. He was wounded at Mission Ridge. Following are two obituaries from unknown papers, but presumably are from that local area (Roseville, Somerest). CHARLES FREDERICK STICKLE CHARLES FREDERICK STICKLE, son of DANIEL M. and CATHERINE STICKEL, was born July 1, 1842, in Somerset, Perry county, Ohio. He departed this life November 23, 1928, aged 86 years, 4 months and 22 days. He was the last of thirteen children. As a child he was brought unto the Lord in baptism and later was confirmed and united with the local Lutheran church. On April 2, 1871, he was united in marriage to MISS PHIDELIA J. JONES. To them eight children were born, two of whom, GEORGE and MRS. JESSIE MOORE preceded him in death. When the war broke out in 1860, MR. STICKEL volunteered in Company G, Thirty-first Regiment, O.V.I. He was wounded at Missionary Ridge, Nov. 25, 1863 but after a season of hospitalization he re-enlisted and served throughout the remainder of the war. He was with GENERAL SHERMAN on his 'March to the Sea.' He was honorably discharged on July 25, 1865. MR. STICKEL carried the effects of his war wound throughout the remainder of his life. MR. STICKEL was engaged in the tannery business but when this business grew slack he became a butcher. His business dealings were all characterized by the most scrupulous honesty. He was a most considerate husband and a kind father. He was a friend of children, always having candy or some little gifts to share with them. He was interested in public affairs and in people in general. One very beautiful thing he and his good wife did, an act that will always be looked upon and remebered in this community as exemplary, was that these two people took three children of their deceased daughter and son-in-law and made a home for them. MR. STICKEL is survived by the following near relatives: His aged wife, five sons, DONALD of New Lexington, FRANK of Somerset, FRED of Zanesville, CHARLES of Newark, SHERMAN of East Fultonham; 22 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. During his long life MR. STICKEL made a host of friends who will mourn his departure.---- ====================================== CHARLES F. MAXINE RUTH6 MOORE (JENNIE KATHERINE5 STICKEL, PHIDELIA JANE4 JONES, REBECCA3 GOODIN, SAMUEL2, MOSES1) was born 14 Feb 1910 in Roseville, Perry Co. OH. She married ALTON BEYER 1933. Notes for MAXINE RUTH MOORE: Personal note from Charles Clayton Moore: I had not heard from my Aunt Maxine in nearly 35 years, since we moved from OH to FL when I was 13. We just lost contact with each other. I conducted a search for her name on the Internet in May of 1998 and three listings came up. One of them was her. I called her and we talked for about 30 minutes, she was very surprised! About three weeks later I received a wonderful 5-page letter from her. Most of the contents (that which I feel is pertinent) is quoted below: "You are quite right about my date of birth and age. I was born Feb. 14, 1910 and am now 88 yrs. Alton [Beyer], my husband, was a long time teacher of English and Literature at Dover, Ohio, and I taught piano privately and worked quite a while as a sales person in childrens' wear. We had two daughters, Lenore who died of cancer Dec 20, '88 in Fayetteville, Arkansas. She was born May 9, 1937. She was a violinist and had 3 sons. And Judith who lives in Steubenville Ohio and was born Feb 22, 1941. Judy has 2 sons and a grandson. "Years ago Judy, Al and I drove to Roseville, Ohio where Keith, Virginia, and I were born, just to look around and talk to whom ever we could. We took a picture of the house where we were born and found a swimming pool in the back yard. We felt kinda bad that it had been changed. There were steps going down to the back of the house which extended down with a basement kitchen and dining area. "We went to the cemetery and took pictures of the Moore family tomb stones there, and recorded dates. Our Grandfather Moore was a blacksmith and had the only pair of horse stocks in the county (to hold the foot while it was being worked on). I remember seeings the sparks fly and loved it as he got them red hot and hammered to shape the shoes. The shop is now a garage, but the owners gave me a brick from the old kiln. They also suggested we see the house. "C.W. Moore 1850-1927 (your Great Grandparents, Charles) Elizabeth Moore 1851-1928. Buried in plot #10 in Roseville Cemetery, across from their home. "I remember having "taken a trip" with Grandpa Moore from Roseville, OH to Zanesville, OH on the train to buy the stocks. It wasn't far to go but it was a big trip for this little girl. Also I had my first taste of coffee at their house (it was a bit of coffee poured over crackers at breakfast). Virginia & Keith were there, too. "I remember hearing that my brother, Keith, when I was born, went up and down the Roseville streets shouting, "I have a baby sister and her name is Magazine!" "I recall Keith and Virginia were right there doing the same things I did. We always played together & with our neighbor friends. Our precious dog, Queen, was our love and constant companion. She never seemed to tire of us. "I have been told by several people what fine and talented parents we had. Our dad was a barber and sign painter. But he did many more things. He had a very "up to date" camera. It was placed on a tripod with a black cover to put over his head when he took pictures. He was a fine camera man and had his own dark room for developing. He also painted pictures and often tinted the photographs. "Our mother crocheted lace, made our clothes. We had lace insertion and edging on our slips. We learned, as we grew up, that Dad and Mother made all of the decorations that were on our Christmas trees. Keith later told me that he had peeked into the living room on Christmas eve when our parents were decorating, and we were supposed to be sound asleep in our beds! "We moved from Roseville to Somerset [OH]--Grandma & Grandpa Stickel's home--when our mother became ill with tuberculosis. They hired a private nurse, "Miss Henthorn," to nurse and take care of sanitation to keep the children healthy and from getting the disease. Our father worked as a barber in Somerset then. Our mother, Jennie Catherine Moore, died in 1918 at age 31 (born 1887). Our father was greatly saddened at her death. I recall hearing that he said, "The sun will never shine on my face again," and as it was, with his spirit gone, he developed typhoid fever, was taken to a Zanesville hospital and also died about three months later. So sad that there were no antibiotics or any medications to treat infections then--in fact, when I grew up and Al and I were just married (1933), Al developed step throat and almost died, a very high fever. Sulfa was just being introduced and the doctor tried it on Al. The doctor later told us "If Al hadn't died of the strep infection, it's a wonder the sulfa hadn't killed him!" It was so crude then. This was about 1938 and our parents died in 1918. I tell you this to show why there were so many deaths earlier, including little children. "The death of our parents was not just a family affair. The whole town of Somerset grieved with and for us. Keith was then 10, I was 8, and Virginia 4. I've been told our parents had a 4th child--Carl--who died at birth. He was between Virginia and me. I can barely recall seeing the little casket sitting by the front door in Roseville. "We three children lived on with Grandma & Grandpa Stickel in Somerset who by this time were getting quite old. They had raised their own 7 children. Grandpa used to trot us on his knee and sing old war songs to us. He was a Civil War veteran--shot through the body and lungs and lay dying on the battle field in the battle for Missionary Ridge in Gettysburg. They passed over his body 3 times with a stretcher, on the 4th time he was able to move a bit and raised his hand. They cut the bullet out of his back right there on the battle field with nothing to dull the pain. From then on he had to sleep propped up with pillows, in a sitting position. "I never heard our grandparents say an unkind word to each other, nor use any kind of profanity. I remember we were't allowed to sing at the talbe or put our arms on the table when we ate. They were good in arithmetic and spelling and helped us when we asked for help, and they encouraged us to study. "I suppose because of the energy drain on our grandparents--their youngest son, Uncle Sherman and his wife Aunt Lesta, of Canton--took Keith to live with them in Canton, OH, as he did for several years. At times Virginia and I would visit there too as well as with their other children. "Later Keith seemed to get the wonder-lust and left their home when he was older. I remember clearly when Keith came driving in saying he had been in Kansas. He stayed a while and was off again. I guess there's a little of that traveling spirit in all of us. "Uncle Sherman and Aunt Lesta, daughter Vera & husband, moved to Florida in later life. He was the youngest son and the last to die on Oct 28, '88 at age 103. Viriginia visited him at the nursing home and saw that he had what he needed and wanted. "Our daughter Judy found some of these pictures of Keith among the pictures I left in her attice when we moved to a mobile home in Texas. I had a few here, too. He was a dear, sweet boy as you can see. We had great times playing together in the back yard. "Charles, your father lived a long life, after all of his war experience and shell shock. He said to me, "I can still hear those Japs picking over our trenches." "You caused me to think a lot about our childhood and I thought about it after I went to bed. "I wish you and your family the best of good fortune and health.
