Lieut. Nathaniel Holcomb was born on 11 June 1673 in Springfield, Mass..1 He was the son of Nathaniel Holcomb and Mary Bliss. He married, at age 22, Martha Buell, age 19, daughter of Sergt. Peter Buell and Martha Cogan, on 1 November 1695 in Simsbury, Hartford Co., Conn..2,3 He died on 29 September 1766 in Simsbury, Conn., at age 93.4,1

Public Office: between 1748 and 1753 he was representative to the General Court of Connecticut.
Military Service: Lieutenant and second in command of the militia, 1716; He joined a force sent to the Housatonic valley to search for enemy Indian forces,1723.

In the early 1700's, Nathaniel and his brother Jonathan, along with George Hayes and John Matson, were considered the leaders of the Salmon Brook community. Nathaniel served as a Lieutenant in 1716, and he was representative to the General Court of Connecticut from 1748-1753.
Along with many of the other leaders of the community, Nathaniel fell victim to the monetary problems, the merchants, and the land speculators during the early 1700's. At some time after 1725, William Thrall, a nephew of our grandfather John Thrall, was calling in his debtors. Nathaniel at one point owed Thrall 41 and Thrall had Nathaniel confined to the county jail, but Nathaniel "from thence breaking the gaol (jail) made his escape, and has since gone at large;" requiring Thrall to petition the legislature to order the sheriff to pursue Holcomb " with horse and foot, and to remand said prisoner back again to the gaol, there to remain until he satisfy said execution and be by law released."
