Eliz.and Sarah, and his mother, Eliz., aboard the Francis from Ipswich,
England.
John was married three times, his first wife was named Abigail, his
secondSarah Nichols, and his third wife was named Prudence.
"He was the richest man in [Watertown], selectman 1664 and often after.
Hiswill, dated 4 days before his death names wife Prudence, and son

LIEUT. JOHN HAMMOND, (William1) b. Lavenham, England, about 1624;
bapt. July 2, 1626. His age was given as 7 years at the time he came
to America with his mother, which practically agrees with the latter
date, but his tombstone gives his age at his death in 1709 as 85 years
and 4 months, which places his birth in July, 1624.

He m. (1) about 1652, Abigail Salter, b. at Rattlesden,
Co. Suffolk, England, (bapt.) Nov. 9, 1623, daughter of George and
Elizabeth (Munning) Salter, who were married at Rattlesden, Oct. 29,
1617. She d. about 1663, and he m. (2) in 1664, Sarah Nichols, of
Charlestown, Mass., who d. Jan. 14, 1688, aged 45 years. He m. (3) in
1689, widow Prudence (Wade) Cotton, dau. of Jonathan Wade, of Ipswich,
Mass., and widow of Rev. Seaborn Cotton, of Hampton. He was her third
husband as she married (1) Dec. 28, 1659, Dr. Anthony Crosby, of
Rowley, Mass., son of widow, Constance Crosby, by whom she had
children who survived her and inherited her property. Lieut. John's
first wife, Abigail Salter, was a sister of Theophilus Salter, an
early resident of Ipswich, Mass.

He was a soldier in King Philip's war in 1675 and 167?? ??n the
garrison at Wrentham. (Soldiers in King Phili?? ??Var, pp,366-7.)

In 1665 he was appointed guardian of his kinswoman, Mehitable Hawkins,
dau. of Timothy and Hannah Hawkins. He was selectman in Watertown, in
1664, 1670, 1692, 1698 and 1701. In 1690 his assessment was the
largest in Watertown.

His will, (Middlesex Probate, No. 7151) dated Nov. 18,
1709, proved Dec. 9, 1709, mentions wife Prudence, son John, daughters
Elizabeth Mason, Abigail Hastings, Hannah Poulter and Hepzibah
Shattuck, and also sons-in-law John Mason, John Hastings, John Poulter
and William Shattuck.

His inventory, dated Nov. 29, 1709, amounted to 961-8.
Through an error the account of the settlement of his estate Jan. 26,
1712-13, is filed at East Cambridge with the papers relating to the
estate of John Hammond, of Newton, (No. 7152) who died in 1762.

There is a long list of sums paid. Among those named are
the following relatives: Henry Phillips, of Charlestown; Experience
Page, (???) Smith, of Roxbury, Timothy Barron, of Watertown; Hopestil
Mead, of Cambridge; Joseph and Samuel Hastings, of Watertown, and
others who may have been connected by marriage or otherwise.
