I have spent a considerable about of time documenting the descendants of Joseph Gist and his wife Sinia Hollis. I have tried to trace each of their 13 children. Soon, I will go back another generation to Cumberland County, North Carolina, where Joseph was born to Joseph Gist and [Ann or Mary] McNeill, [daughter of Neill McNeill, who died before 1777.]

Joseph Gist served as a private in the War of 1812, under CPT John Jackson in the TN Militia. His brother Joshua also served in the same unit. Discharged at Nashville, May 13, 1815.

BRIEF HISTORY:
Part of the division under Major General William Carroll's at New Orleans, this regiment comprised the right section of Carroll's line at the breastworks at Chalmette. Muster rolls show casualties in the engagements of December 1814 and January 1815. Lieutenant Colonel James Henderson was killed in the skirmish of 28 December 1814. Captain Daniel Bradford led the elite corps known as "Carroll's Life Guard." The division reached New Orleans in mid-December 1814 after an excursion down the Mississippi River."

On March 6, 1818, he received a grant of 79.5 acres from the US Government in Lauderdale Co, AL (Lauderdale Co, AL Tract Bk, p. 86, State Dept., Montgomery)

"The county court was organized at the house of Dr. Joseph Farmer, then occupied by Josephus Irvine. The court met on the first Monday in May 1818, and there were present the Worshipful Duncan McIntyre, JOSEPH GEST, James Forbes, John Hillhouse, and Henson Day, justices...

The first term of circuit court was held in November of 1818, at the house of Dr. Farmer, as above...The first circuit jury was composed of John Simonton, Thomas Parker, Thomas Welch, George Lucas, John Hillhouse, Pollard Wisdom, Henson Day, [THE] David Crockett, JOSEPH GEST, Nelson McIntrye, James McConnell, James Forbes and William Straughn."

Some time before 1830, Joseph Gist moved to Lauderdale Co., AL where his name is found on the census record of that year with a wife and six sons.

Joseph Gist served as Lauderdale Co. Justice of the Peace in 1840 and 1844, hence the nickname "Squire" Gist.

Joseph Gist Estate
The final settlement and allowance of the account of the account of Vincent M. Benham administrator of the Estate of Joseph Gist deceased, having been set for this term of the Court, the same Came in to be hears, Came Said Administrator and moved the Court to examine State, audit and report said account for allowances, and it appearing to the Court that notice of publication in the Florence Gazette has been given as the law directs, the Court proceeded to State examine & report Said account for allowance and the most of the heirs of Said Joseph Gist being present, and making no objections to Said account of Said Administrator as reported for allowence it is ordered adjudged and decreed by the Court that Said account be allowed and recorded as the final Settlement of Said Benham administrator of Said estate - It appears from Said account that said administrator has received in account of said estate and Charges himself with the sum of twenty nine hundred and ninety 66/100 dollars and has paid out in account of the general expense of the Estate the sum of one hundred and Sixty 33/100 dollars, when deducted leaves a balance in the hands of Said Administratoro to devide among the heirs at law of Said estate and it appearing to the court that their twelve heirs intitled to distribution in Said estate the sum to which each would be intitled is $237 02/100
It is therefore ordered adjudged and decreed by the Court that said heirs to with Levi Gist, in his own right, and the administrator of Thomas Gist - James Gist, Joseph Gist, John Gist, Washington Gist, David C. Gist, Andrew Gist, Layfayette Gist by his Guardian Enoch R. Kennedy, Mina Jane Ham & her husband William Ham, Sina Holcrum [sic] & her husband Samuel Holcrum, & Sally Van Martin & her husband George W. Martin each recover of said Vincent M. Benham the sum of two hundred and thirty seven 02/100 Dollars being the distributive share of each of said children in the Estate of theirs [?] and the fund in said Administrators hands to divide $237 02/100 & also Sina Gist.

Joseph is buried in the Gist cemetery 3 miles west of Green Hill, Lauderdale Co, AL.
Location: take US 72 and 43 east to Green Hill; turn left on Gisttown road and go about 4 miles to the Gisttown community. The cemetery is located on a high hill in a heavily wood area, with huge trees surrounding it for about 1/2 mile. It is about 1/4 mile east of Shoal Creek and overlooks the Hollis bottoms.

William Q. Hill reported on this cemetery: "Perhaps this is one of the very early burial places in the county. There was only one grave that had a tombstone with inscriptions on it. Thirty graves were counted that had fieldstones and there appeared to be other graves, with no markers at all."

The heirs ARE NOT listed as I have them here, they are in paragraph form, but I thought this would be easier to locate. Knowing that Thomas and Silas were also sons of Joseph, puts the list of children at 13 in number, 11 living in 1853. Not a bad record for that time period.

The x'ing out of Thomas's name means that he died UNMARRIED and left no heirs. Silas was only 17 when he died, so it's fairly safe to state that he also died unmarried. The Gist men appear to marry 'late'.

GIST, DAVID CROCKETT - PVT Co E 5th Arkansas Regiment CSA "The Fighting Fifth"
Enlisted 26 Jun 1861 at Gainesville, Greene County, AR. Joined for duty 27Jun1861 at Pocahontas for 11 months and was transferred to the CSA on the same date and was mustered by D.C.Cross.

He was captured 9 Oct 1862 at the Battle of Perryville, [Harrodsburg] KY and was shipped to Vicksburg, MS via Cairo, IL. His age at this time was given as 23. One card shows him as DAVID CROCKETT GIST. (He was evidently paroled at Vicksburg, but the records do not indicate this.)

Nov-Dec1863 - Wounded at Ringgold, GA 27Nov1863 [Chattanooga, Tenn. and Ringgold, GA Campaign]

Jan-Feb1864 - Again listed as present.
