3. JACOB² SCHMITT (JOHANN¹) was born January 10, 1849 in Gau Bichelheim, Germany, and died August 06, 1931 in New York, New York. He married ANNA BRUNK October 28, 1876 in New York. She was born May 29, 1859 in Hesse Darmstadt, Germany.

"Jacob Schmitt was my great-grandfather. These are the facts that I have been able to gather from various sources. Jacob (sometimes spelled Jakob) was a butcher. He was issued a passport by the ministry of His Royal Highness the Grand Duke of Hess on January 18, 1866. The passport describes him as being white with blue eyes (among other descriptions no longer legible). It stated that his place of birth was Gau Bickelheim. Presumably he emigrated to the United States sometime after this, probably in 1866. He was granted U.S. citizenship on June 30, 1874 by the Court of Common Please for the City and County of New York (now the Supreme Court of the State of New York). He was married to Anna Brunk on October 28, 1876, by a Justice of the District Court of New York. At the time of their marriage, he was 27 and Anna was 17. Their marriage certificate indicates that it was the first marriage for both of them and that they both resided at 348 East 47th Street, New York City. The certificate states that Anna's place of birth was Hesse Darmstadt. It is possible that they were acquainted with each other prior to leaving Germany. The marriage was witnessed by Jacob's brothers, Peter and Phillip. His brother, Phillip, went west and settled in the state of Washington. Based on the evidence of the marriage certificate, he was still in New York at the time of the marriage. Jacob died on August 6, 1931. According to his certificate of death, he died of chronic arteriosclerosis, myocarditis, and old age, with a contributing cause of hypostatic pneumonia. The certificate of death indicated that he had lived in the US for 65 years and was a resident of New York City for the entire time. At the time of his death, he was living at 352 East 87th Street, New York, NY. He was buried on August 10, 1931, in Lutheran Cemetery (now All Faiths Cemetery), Queens, NY."
