some references list 10 children, others list 13.

Michael Hyder came to the Watauga Settlement from Hampshire County, Virginia in 1766 or 1768.

Hyder list has been accepted by D.A.R. as authentic.

Tradition has it that he was conscripted to stay at Fort Watauga and protect the women and children from the Indian uprising that was occuring. Most of the men in the area headed to the Battle of King's Mountain during the Revolutionary War to fight Gen. Ferguson. Gen. Ferguson had sent word that if the settlers here didn't pledge allegiance to the King that he would come over here and wipe us out. We decided to go get him first. It took 12 days to travel to King's Mountain. In Fort Lee in the Watagua Settlement on 7/21/1776 when Indians attacked.

"Historical Reminiscences of Carter County Tennessee", p.1--5

Among the very first of these pioneers of western civilization in the last months of 1769, came Michael Hyder with his wife, Elizabeth, and two infant sons, John and Michael, from Hampshire County, Virginia.

Michael Hyder built a powder mill on Powder Branch. It consisted of a pole suspended in the middle by a large oak pin through it, resting in two forks. The front end had another pin placed perpendicular in it, forming a pestle. The back end had a box on it, into which the water poured, and by its weight the front end was raised. When the water rushed out the pestle came down with a thud into a box, chopped in a log where the charcoal, sulphur and saltpeter had been placed in proper proportions to be pulverized by the slow strokes of the pestle. The saltpeter was made from local caves (Hyder and Gourley), and the charcoal was burned. The sulphur had to be carried across the mountains hundreds of miles on horseback. Powder thus made had the character of "burning in a minute" and readily sold for $1 per pound, when the best land in the Watauga Valley could be bought for $.50 or $1 per acre.
