BADIAH "OBED" (B) DENHAM:
From This History of William Denham and His Family by Marie Moody Foster

Obadiah, called "Obed" Denham, son of William Denham, was born in Rowan County (now Wilkes County), North Carolina, in 1773. (His birth date is verified by the 1850 Pulaski County, Kentucky Census.) His mother was a Turner. He became a resident of Madison County, Kentucky around 1789. He paid his first poll tax in Madison County in 1794. (Poll taxes were paid when a man reached age 21.)

Obed married Rebecca Barnes, the daughter of Elias and Rebecca Barnes in Madison County, Kentucky on December 12, 1795. It has been stated by kinsmen they were the parents of sixteen children. (Thirteen children accounted for.)

Obed was a good businessman. He was a farmer. He moved to Pulaski County, Kentucky around 1808; the 1810 Pulaski County Census shows him being in residence there. His first home place lay on the waters of Fishing Creek in Pulaski County. He owned land in the counties of Lincoln, Casey, Estill, and Madison.

In November 1819, one month before his death, William Denham gave to Obed his power of attorney. Obed was named administrator of his father's estate during the January term of court in 1820. Records show he tried to be a fair and just man in making settlement of the estate, but his judgement was questioned by some of the heirs. He was given a rough time for four years (according to the circuit court records, Order Books C, D, E, F, G, 1820 through 1824, Pulaski County, Kentucky), before the final settlement was made.

Rebecca Denham died in 1835. It is assumed she was buried in the Fishing Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Obed remained a widower for ten years. His unmarried children lived with him.

Obed Denham married Mary "Polly" Davis on August 5, 1845, in Pulaski County, Kentucky. His youngest (living) son, Obed Denham, Jr., served as his bondsman. They had no issue.

Obed had given his sons and sons-in-law many acres of land "out of love and affection" before he married Miss Davis. He had also sold them some land.

Obadiah, called "Obed" Denham, died on April 16, 1861 in his 87th year, at his home place, which was located on Rock Lick Creek.

Obed left a will. He named his son, William Denham, as executor. his widow, Mary Denham, received the home place, some household furnishings and money. All other heirs shared in the remainder of the estate, including grandchildren whose parents were deceased. (Will Book 6, Page 7, File Box (1860-65, C.C. and Crt, Court, Pulaski County, Kentucky)

Remained single. Records show that she was born with an affliction that impaired her mind. In 1845, her brother, John Denham, sued his father for the custody of Nancy because he did not want a step-mother to be in charge of her. She was cared for by John throughout her lifetime. When he migrated west, she went along with him and his family.

Hi Hermon and all,

I don't know anyone except Naomi who had this bit of information, but Willis,
in my and Naomi's direct lines, lived in Green County, Ill. around 1843 and
owned land there. So did James for a short time. I believe that to be
Willis' brother.

Information from: Cynthia Fulcher, Email: fulcher@apex.net, March 1999
She came to Adair Co., KY with her parents in 1824. Her husband was her first cousin. It is believed that Myrah was living with her uncle, Parker Denham, at the time of her marriage. Her mother had left Adair Co., KY for Calloway Co., KY by February 1, 1827. Parker was the uncle of both the bride and groom and was bondsman at the wedding. He stated that they were both 21 years of age.
