The following obituary appeared in the 16 April 1897 edition of the
Elberton Star:
"DEATH OF A GOOD WOMAN - Mrs. R. E. Adams Called to Her Reward Last
Saturday - Mother of Elberton's Mayor - She was well known in the
county and leaves a husband and 8 children to mourn her loss.
"Mrs. Richard E. Adams, who died at her home at Ruckersville last
Friday, was a native of Elbert County. She was the daughter of Mr.
Mims Cleveland who died several years since. Mrs. Adams was a devout
and consistent member of the Methodist church and died in the full
assurance of a blessed immortality.
"She was a quiet domestic woman that loved her hom and family and
administered faithfully to them. The heart of her husband could
safely trust in her and her children are spared to rise up and bless
her memory. A good wife, a good mother, a good neighbor and a good
Christian has passed from death unto life, and while a shadow dark
and gloomy rests on her earthly home, her heavenly home is made to
rejoice in her presence. She had a large number of relatives and
friends in Elbert county who will miss her kindly greeting, but they
should not wish to call her back. This would be a selfish love, for
she has entered into rest.
"Mrs. Adams was an invalid and suffered a great deal, but with sweet
resignation and patience she waited for the summons to her Father's
home. She was prepared and thus death had no terrors for this
Christian woman. She died in the house in which she had lived all her
life. Her remains were laid to rest in the Elberton cemetery Saturday
afternoon, a large concourse of relatives and friends being present
to pay the last sad tribute of respect. Rev. B. F. Fraser conducted
the services.
"She was the wife of Hon. R. E. Adams who has represented this
county in the legislature, and mother of Captain W. Adams, Mayor of
Elberton. Besides her husband eight children survive her, Messrs.
Willis B., E. Lucius and W. Andrew Adams, Mrs. George Hall, Mrs.
Jim Carpenter and Misses Mamie, Ida and Reesie Adams. She was also
a sister of Mr. Andrew J. Cleveland. She was fifty-seven years of
age at the time of her death. To the bereaved husband, children and
other relatives The Star extends sympathy."
