states he was Ensign in continental Line under Capt William Bethel, enlisting from Rockingham or Guilford Cos. NC and serving 16 months. Query gives same info about his marriage to Alathea Hale. Says they lived nearby in Sullivan Co for Abt 10 years then moved to Smith Co., and 1809 settled in Giles Co., TN. Gives birthplace of children: see individual charts. States the earliest Allens of this line are believed to have been several brothers who came from Scotland and settled in VA.

Daniel Allen enlisted at Guilford, NC (which then inc. Rockingham Co., NC; served as Ensign in REV WAR under Capt. Wm. Bethel for more than 16 months. After war to moved to Washington Co., TN where he married in 1788, Alathea Hale, at the home of her father, Richard Hale, on Sinking Creek, in Washington Co.,TN. Daniel and family lived for a time in Sullivan Co., TN then to Smith Co., TN for a time, and finally on to Giles Co., TN ca. 1808-1809; he died there July 30, 1834; his widow died in Lawrence Co., TN Oct 16 1858. Children are listed. -
Chris Allen reports over the Internet address above: Thomas Allen, Sr. of Guilford and Rockingham counties, NC. Eldest son, Daniel states clearly in his REV WAR pension application that he came from Rockingham Co., NC where his father still lived in 1788. No will or estate records for Thomas Sr. but some land records which are not clear as to which are definitely this Thomas Allen, Sr.

"Early History of Giles Co., TN" : Williamson Co., established Oct 1799 - Treaty Jan 1806 north of Duck River was settled - South was Indian Territory. Giles was part of Williamson until 1807 when Maury County was organized. Part of what is now (1999) Giles - on the south side of the Elk River was Williamson County and were required to register there. Nov. 14, 1809 - Giles county was established. Daniel Allen was one of the first settlers at what is known as Allen-Wright's Spring; he had a powder mill; father of Gen. R. H. Allen. Daniel later lived in Lawrence County.

A Brief Sketch of the Settlement and Early History of Giles Co., TN by James McCallum: page 31, "Daniel Allen was one of the first settlers, and settled as what is now known as Allen-Wright Springs. He erected a powder mill, making powder there for several years. He was the father of General Richard H. Allen, for many years a prominent citizen of this county, and afterwards, Lawrence Co., TN. Settlers went to Williamson County the first year for corn.

Giles Co. Historical Society Bulletin, Jan 1999 Vol X X VI, pg. 30: Daniel Allen, one of the first settlers in the northern part of the county, located near what was for years known as Wright's Spring, a few miles northwest of the present site of Campbellsville. Mr. Allen erected a powder mill shortly after coming to the county and supplied the early settlers for years with the product of his mill.

October 1999: JMM and PVM found the Allen-Wright Springs area of Giles County, TN just off the Workman Bridge to the east on Hwy 166 near the Giles/Maury County line. (about 4 miles south of county line) but in Giles County. Large rock formation with cave and large spring of clear, clear water.
(At one time, Pulaski city government wanted to use this spring for water to supply the people of the upper part of Giles county, but for some reason the people did not want the water, nor want to pay for it, and the idea was dropped. Cave, rock hill, and stream appears to have people living around it, and they may rent, or own this area now. Pictures in fil
