Article from 'THE SECOND LINE (Vol. XXXII Pg 3 Fall 1980) ERNIE "CAG" CAGNOLATTI, AILING-------Ernie Cagnolatti, popular New Orleans musician, who has been blowing the trumpet since 1927, suffered a sever stroke which has curtailed movement of his left arm and hand. He came home from the hospital on August 27th and is slowly recuperating at home. This is the second serious set back for the always cheerful and optimistic Cagnolatti. Late in 1969 his leg was amputated above the knee because of blood clots. The cut was so high that a prosthesis was not feasible. He fought his way back from a wheelchair and within a year was playing again. Up until his stroke he was leading his own band and playing regularly at Preservation Hall, even making a trip to Europe with his band last year. At times, he seemed To forget about the missing leg and frequently stood up to play his solos with an amazing sense of balance. Cag was inspired to play trumpet by listening to Bunk Johnson play at shipyards in Madisonville during World War I. Bunk played with Ernie's brother Clabere, who was drummer. Ernie moved to New Orleans in 1919 and was soon playing occasional jobs with George Lewis and others, although he was playing drums then. In the late 1940's he joined Paul Barbarin's Band, which frequently traveled to the East coast and Mid West. He was associated with Barbarin until his death in 1969. He was also a member of Louis Cottrell's group. Until the loss of his leg, he played with numerous brass bands, including Henry Allen Sr.'s, the Eureka and Onward.
Ernie says he'll be back and we sincerely hope and pray that he will. We would like to encourage NOJC Members to send him a note. Ernie Cagnolatti, 3615 Buchanan Street. New Orleans, La 70122.
