Notes for A
NDREAS GIERING:
While still in Germany he made the acquaintance of several Brethern which led to his journey to the Moravian settlement in Herrnhaag in Wetteravia. He resolved to accompany several of his Moravian friends to Pennsylvania. On arriving in PA on th eship "Irene" in 1751, he lived for some time in the house of the single Brethern in Bethlehem, but upon their recommendation settled in Emmaus where he followed his trade. In 1755 he and his wife were received into the Moravian congregation. In 1759 it was Andreas Giering who built and occupied the first house in the little village. Andreas and Maria Catharina were recieved into the Moravian congregation on February 16, 1755, just before the birth of their first child.

Notes for M
ARIA CATHARINA KNAUSS:
When Maria was 7 years old she came to live with her brother Johannes in Maguntsche and there learned to know the Moravian Brethern. In the hurch Book she is quoted as saying:
"But in my 13th year my mother took me home by force, for fear I would be seduced by them. I implored the Lord to help me back to my brother and the following year I quietly stole away and was received by my brother again and remained there to my 19th year. Now and then I visited the Brethern in Bethlehem and finally upon my petitions I received permission to live in the single sisters' house. But because I did not yet know my Saviour well enough, nor myself, my sojourn there was short and I believed it better to return to Maguntsche." Several months later she married Andreas Giering.
