The Ruane Family of Lisnagroobe, Co. Roscommon, Ireland

A Chairde!!!!

My Irish roots include the Patrick Moran, John Hett, William Walsh, Murphy, Mary Kennedy, Thomas Ruane, Margaret Connelly, and Mary Ronane families. In 1999 I began a quest to find my Irish roots. After submitting an article to a newspaper in Ireland, I was contacted by a possible relative. I discovered that I still had a cousin living on the old Ruane homestead in Lisnagroobe, Co. Roscommon Ireland.

I then had to visit, so I flew to Dublin, first to do more research at the National Library of Ireland, discovering my Moran roots in Ballybunion. Next, to the valuation office to search land records. Then on to Lisnagroobe to see for myself, what a treat!!!!! To meet honest to goodness old country relatives!!! The thatched roofed cottage is still standing where my great grandmother Catherine was born. It is no longer thatched and is no longer used as a cottage, it is now home to cows, but its character still remains.

On a Celtic Cross tombstone in the Kiltullagh Cemetery near the Ruane Homestead, I believe I may have also found my Hett roots. That was truly a God moment for me. I did not know before my trip where my Hetts were from, I knew they were from Ireland, but not the townland.

My husband and I then traveled to Ballybunion to find my Moran relatives. I am not sure if I found the right ones but I found some lovely descendants of Margaret Moran who once lived in the same area. I was also searching for my Walsh relatives but found none, hopefully next time. Supposedly the Moran's and Walsh's lived side by side near Ballybunion.

As the story goes my great grandfather, Stephen Moran was sent to town to sell a horse and never returned. Sad, but I guess he was desperate, it was desperate times then, the 1800's in western Ireland.

I hope anyone related to these families will contact me with their stories so we can fill in all those lovely blanks and who knows maybe one day soon, we can have a Ruane/Hett reunion in Ballinlough, a Moran/Walsh reunion in Ballybunion, and a holiday in Killarney, le cunamh De!!!

I have also traced my mother's family, the surnames include the following: Parkhurst, Bushnell, Burgess, Clark, Adgate, Barrett, Browne, Chapman, Head, Garfield, Glover, Hapgood, Ingham, Jones, Lovet, Morse, Pitcher, Pratt, Tuttle, Warner, and Whitney. These families all emigrated in the 1600's from England.

Dia linn!!!!
