Welcome to the Homepage of the Morry family of Newfoundland, ex Devon.

We are the descendants of Matthew Morry, who was born in St. Saviour's Parish in Dartmouth, Devon, christened on March 28, 1750. He had business dealings in Newfoundland surrounding fishing and shipping throughout the late 1700s and he emigrated to Caplin Bay (now Calvert), Newfoundland with many, but not all, of his children in about 1796, after the death of his first wife, Mary Graham. After emigrating, he remarried Anne Carter, daughter of another prominent member of the Ferryland community, Robert Carter, and settled in Ferryland, where he died on June 19, 1836. Through the years many of the marriages and business associations of the Morrys involved well-known English West Country families who also emigrated to Ferryland, including the Carters, the Sweetlands, the LeMessuriers, the Tessiers, the Holdsworths, etc. The family tree file includes my paternal (Morry) and maternal (Wheeler) lines and my wife’s paternal (O’Brien) and maternal (Quinlisk) lines. Common names include, in alphabetical order: Battcock, Carter, Gosse, LeMessurier, Morry, O’Brien, Oliphant, Payne, Quinlisk, Rendell, Sesk, Stabb, Sullivan, Tessier, Webster, Wheeler, White, Windsor and several variants of each of these names.

The family tree now contains over 7644 names - an increase of over 1000 from the last update less than a year ago.

The Section here named My Family History shows only my immediate ancestors - a very small subset of the overall Tree.

Please contact me if you are interested in any of the families in this family tree and perhaps we can assist each other with our genealogical research.

Family Photos

  • John Henry Morry with daughters and niece ca 1895 (77 KB)
This photo is a closeup of the group in the doorway of the Holdsworth house photo seen here. The Caption by Nimshi Crewe says: Given to me to-day 2 May 1953 by Mrs. Helena LeMessurier (5) now. She had written beneath: "Would like these? Perhaps you have them. Keep them if you would like them." Nimshi then adds: 1. John Morry, son of Matthew Morry & father of Thomas Graham Morry who was the father of the present Howard Morry of Ferryland (now about 67 yrs old). 2. Frances Morry, dau. of John Morry: died unmarried about 1946 in St. John's. 3. Alice Wylie. Do. Do. (Mrs Archer Ellis). 4. Josephine Morry. Do. (Mrs. W. N. Gray). 5. Helena Morry, dau. of John's brother Robert and wife of Mr. Frank LeMessurier. 6. Florence Morry - died unmarried.
  • Pvt. Thomas Graham Morry III (Right) (16 KB)
In Fort Gary (now Winnipeg) with the Active Militia Force, 1872-1874 Riel Rebellion
  • Howard Morry and the Holdsworth Boundary Stone (56 KB)
This photograph, taken in about 1960, shows Howard Morry beside the Holdsworth boundary stone, which marked the corner of the property in Ferryland purchased by John Henry Morry and his partner and brother-in-law Peter Paint LeMessurier from Sir Arthur Holdsworth. The stone, which was purportedly brought over from Devon at the time the Holdsworth's gained possession of this land in the mid-1700s, and which was used for over two centuries as not only a legal marker but also a bolster to tie boats to shore during storms, has unfortunately since disappeared.
  • Matthew Morry III (1813-1854) (37 KB)
This is reputed to be a portrait of Matthew Morry III, the grandson of the immigrant. The portrait is in a large oval glass covered frame and is presently in the possession of Howie Morry in St. John's. It came to him from his brother Jamie at the time of his death, who had in turn received it from Jean Morry Funkhouser. It was she who identified it as Matthew Morry. But there has since been some suggestion that it is actually Matthew's brother William Sweetland Morry. It will be difficult if not impossible to reconcile this uncertainty now. The portrait hung for years in the house of Thomas Graham Morry where Jean Kavanagh Morry now lives.
  • John Henry Morry 1818-1897 (20 KB)
Portrait of John Henry Morry as a young man ca. 1840. This portrait now hangs in the Ferryland Museum, having been donated by the family of Ruth Carey, one of John Henry's granddaughters.
  • Morry House and the Gaze in Winter ca 1940 (42 KB)
This photo shows the house that Howard Leopold Morry built over the foundation of the old Holdsworth house after it was torn down in the early 1900s. The Holdsworth house had fallen into ruins due to a condition in the will of John Henry Morry that prevented Howard's father, Thomas Graham Morry, from taking possession of his inheritance and maintaining it while his maiden sisters remained alive and unmarried. They refused to allow him access to the house, though neither of them lived there, because he had married a Roman Catholic against their wishes. Unfortunately they outlived both him and the house.
  • Thomas Graham Morry III & extended family (1 KB)
Copy of photograph held by Fredi Caines. According to Peter Morry, the people in this photograph are: Back Row: Bertha, Josey, Catherine, Tom, Don't know who older is. 2nd Row: Aunt Flossy, Cousin Shan, Trix Morry 1st Row: Howard Morry, Helena LeMessurier, 3rd Cousin to Trix. There is some doubt about some of these identifications. TG Morry can be identified with complete certainty. The woman to the his left is most probably his wife Catherine. The younger woman in the 2nd row is likely Trix but if so it is impossible that the boy in the front row is Dad Morry. He was three years older than Trix. This boy is clearly many years younger therefore likely Dad Morry's brother John. The others are a mystery. The old lady on the right is probably Miss Lizzie Morry, T.G. Morry's older first cousin, who was the last Morry owner of Athlone in Calvert (then Caplin Bay), a regular visitor to the Morry's in Ferryland according to Dad. The other ladies are likely T. G. Morry's sisters and cousins, as suggested. They would be: Bertha - Roberta Ann Morry, daughter of Robert Morry and Maria Windsor, TG Morry's 1st cousin. Josey - Jane Josephine Morry, TG Morry's sister. Aunt Flossy - Florence B. Morry, TG Morry's sister. Cousin Shan - Johanna Agnes White,Catherine White's niece. Trix Morry - Beatrice Mary Morry, TG Morry's sister. Helena LeMessurier - Helena Morry, Bertha's sister and TG and Trix Morry's 1st cousin (not 3rd cousin).
  • Frederick Clift Morry ca 1850 (12 KB)
This photo was sent to me by Karen Chapman in July 2002. She owns the original Daguerrotype in its leather case. Believed to be Frederick, a grandson of the immigrant.
  • Howard Leopold Morry's 84th Birthday Party - 1969 (77 KB)
This photo of a singalong at Howard Leopold Morry's 84th birthday party shows: Bill, Reg, Howard Jr., Tom, and Phyl with their father at Phyllis's house on Portugal Cove Rd. in St. John's.
  • TG & Catherine Morry and relatives ca 1900 (26 KB)
This photo shows TG and Catherine Morry and some of their children as well as two cousins. In Howard Leopold Morry's handwritten note on the back they are identified as: "Back row left to right, Kathleen O'Driscoll, my first cousin, yours truly, Mom and the man behind the bunch of hair Dad, Front Row, Phyl O'Driscoll, Uncle Graham and Trix." He doesn't identify the little boy almost cut off at the bottom of the photo but it could be no one else than his brother John.
  • Robert Morry 1829-1898 (32 KB)
Photo courtesy of Karen Funkhouser Chapman, July 2002
  • Howard Morry with members of RNR in Britain 1915 (54 KB)
This photo shows Howard Morry, second from left, with several of his fellow soldiers in the Royal Newfoundland Regiment while on leave from training in Scotland prior to shipping out for Egypt and then Galliopli and France.
  • Catherine Frances White & TG Morry ca 1880 (31 KB)
This photo shows Catherine Frances White and Thomas Graham Morry at about the time of their wedding in 1880.
  • Holdsworth House, Ferryland ca 1890 (32 KB)
This is the view of the old stone house in Ferryland shortly before it was taken down. John Morry (grandson of the emigrant) owned this house beginning in 1844.
  • Howard Morry with members of RNR in France ca 1916 (41 KB)
This photo shows Howard Morry (tall man in hat, second from right at back) with members of his unit in the field in the Somme prior to the Battle of Beaumont Hamel. It is likely that many of those shown here died or were wounded in that battle as Howard Morry was one of only about sixty or so in the Royal Newfoundland Regiment who was not injured or killed; 22 officers and 658 ranks were casualties of that single battle.
  • TG Morry and Clara Isabelle Windsor ca 1930 (37 KB)
This photo would have been taken in British Columbia about the time that Thomas Graham Morry moved west to marry his childhood sweetheart, Clara Isabelle Windsor. She had married TG Morry's cousin, William Sweetland Morry, while TG was out west during the Riel Revellion. William was lost at sea and she remarried soon after to Richard Alex McCoubrey and had one son by him. TG's first wife, Catherine Frances White, died in 1927. He settled his affairs in Ferryland made out his well and left for the west. The identity of the woman behind them is unknown.
  • Holdsworth Property (83 KB)
Plan of the Holdsworth Property as it was put up for sale in 1827. Later purchased by John Morry. Plan and description of property courtesy of Steve Barnable and Dr. John Mannion (MUN)
  • Pvt. Howard Morry Official Regiment Photo ca 1915 (47 KB)
Another official regimental photo. This may have been taken in Newfoundland prior to shipping out but more than likely such photos were made once the troops had assembled for training in Edinburgh, where they were billetted at Edinburgh Castle. The structure of the building in front of which they are assembled is reminiscent of a stone castle more than a wooden barracks, as would have been the case in Newfoundland. Howard is the man under the "x".
  • Bill, Tom and Reg as boys ca 1928 (63 KB)
This photo is purported to be of Bill, Tom and Reg Morry as boys in Ferryland. Since there are no other photos of them at that time in existence it is difficult to prove one way or the other.
  • Athlone Cottage, Caplin Bay (Calvert) (60 KB)
The house originally purchased by Matthew Morry III, grandson of the emigrant in mid 1800s. It passed to his daughter, Lizzie Morry who left it to her adopted brother Alfred Canning. G. Pocius' Book
  • Howard and Fredris Morry's wedding photo ca. 1915 (29 KB)
This is the official wedding photograph taken in Edinburgh on June 02, 1915. Howard met Fredris while in Edinburgh on training with the Royal Newfoundland Regiment prior to the regiment heading overseas for engagements in Gallipoli, Beaumont Hamel and elsewhere in France.
  • Lizzie Morry of Athlone, Caplin Bay (36 KB)
This photo is found in the Ferryland Museum though I believe a copy of it is in Peter Morry's possession as well.
  • Howard and Fredris Morry's Wedding Portrait (69 KB)
This oval glass framed portrait was evidently painted around the time of Howard Morry and Fredris Minty's wedding in Edinburgh in June 1915.
  • Matthew Morry's petition (56 KB)
This is a copy of the original petition, now in the Provincial Archives of Newfoundland and Labrador, for rights to a fishing room in Caplin Bay, now Calvert. Transcript in Notes.
  • Howard Leopold Morry and RNR Company "C" ca 1915 (75 KB)
This is an official regimental photograph of the platoon in which Howard Leopold Morry served in "C" Company of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment. Howard Leopold Morry is the tall man in the centre of the back row.
