The Sanchez-Morenos have been largely based in Arequipa, Peru, since the 1790s, when Santiago Sanchez-Moreno emigrated from Fuenteheridos, near Sevilla, Spain. (The hyphen has often been dropped in the past couple generations, but the names have traveled together for 300 or 400 years.) Other surnames of interest: Elguera (once de la Helguera) (originally from Cantabria in northern Spain, near Castro-Urdiales), Lira, Moscoso, Osorio, del Carpio, Melgar, Reinoso, Bascones and de la Torre (esp. Juan de la Torre, born 1480s, Villagarcia, Spain--one of the founders of Arequipa). Most of these families have been in Peru since at least the 1700s. Also the McParlins, originally from Scotland. William McParlin immigrated to Maryland from County Down, Ireland, around 1790. The Magruder/McGregors in Maryland and Scotland. And the Woodwards and Hillearys of Maryland, as well as Cotrells of Missouri and Virginia, and Andersons of Virginia.
