1. JOHN¹ ROGERS was born Abt. 1617 in Gravesend, England, and died Abt. 1685 in Surry Co, Virginia. He married MARY ATKINS Abt. 1645 in James City, Virginia, daughter of RICHARD ATKINS and JOAN ATKINS. She was born 1621 in Virginia, and died Abt. 1685 in Surry Co, Virginia.

Colonial Service: JOHN ROGERS, 18 and Thomas Rogers,16 "persons of quality" sailed on the "GEORGE" on Aug. 21,1635 from Gravesend to Virginia.
[1] They were probably brothers.In 1644-5 JOHN ROGERS was a Burgess from Surry side, James City Co.,in the Virginia General Assembly:

[2] Surry Co. was formed in 1652 from the part of James City Co. south of the James River. In 1657 JOHN ROGERS had a legacy from Karbry Kegan,

[3] and in 1659 one from John Dixon.

[4] In 1666 John Rogers received a land grant of 200 acres on the south side of Cypress Swamp in Surry Co, for transporting four indentured servants to work on his tobacco plantation:

Tithables [6] record his family as follows: 1673 JOHN ROGERS 1: 1674 JOHN ROGERS & Son 2: 1675 JOHN ROGERS & Son 2: 1676 no list, due to Bacon's Rebellion: 1677 JOHN ROGERS & *WILLIAM 8 John his sons, 3: 1678 JOHN ROGERS & John & Daniel his sons,3: *WILLIAM ROGERS (#2048) at ye widow Owens,1. In 1683 JOHN ROGERS paid his parish dues: being over 60 he no longer owed county tithes (taxes).

[7] In Sept. 1677 JOHN ROGERS Sr. served on the Surry Co. jury for trials in Bacon's Rebellion cases, including those of another younger John Rogers and his father Joseph Rogers (of a different family).

[8] In 1681 JOHN ROGRERS Sr. appointed Elias Osborn as his attorny.

[9] In 1682 he appointed his wife MARY ROGERS ye elder as his attorny to collect his debts,etc. John Rogers Jr. made oath to same.

[10] In 1682 Thos. Jordan patented 265 acres in Upper Parrish of Surry Co. adjoining JOHN ROGERS and a great reedy branch.

[11] In 1682 JOHN ROGERS Sr. and NARY his wife of Surry Co; for 1000 lbs. of tobacco sold their 200 acres on the south side of Cypress Swamp in Surry Co. to Edward Grantham.

[12] In 1683 JOHN ROGERS Sr. and Jeremiah Ellis had a case in Surry Co. Court, judged in favor of Ellis in 1685.

[13] JOHN ROGERS Sr. died about this time, no record of his will has been found. In 1681 John Rogers Jr. married #1 Nary Booth of Isle of Wight Co. Va., (called Nary Rogers the younger).

[14] After her death he married # 2 Agnes Smith of York Co. Va.: In 1687 he was executor for the will of his brother-in-law John Smith of York Co.,and in 1688 Agnes Rogers was a witness for the inventory of this estate.

[15] This John Rogers moved to Bertie Co. N.C., where he proved his headrights in 1701. In 1726 he died there; his will named only his son John Rogers III.
