Notes for Ivan Richard Eddings:
Family History

Ivan was half Cherokee and lived with the Cherokee tribe. About 1835, Ivan was a guard during one of the many meetings in New Echota, Georgia*. Prior to the removal of the Indian tribes, Ivan killed a man in a fight and he and his family were forced to "go on scout". They later joined their family in the Cherokee Nation, probably around 1850. They lived there until the U.S. Army forced them from their homes, because their names could not be found on the Indian rolls. This is another story involving the Dawes Commission and the Eddings family attempts to reclaim their land. It is well documented by Arthur Sturgill a relative in Provo, Utah. I have copies of his documentation.

In Levy Richard Eddings application for shares due them from the Cherokee Indian blood line, he states that his father, Ivan Eddings was born in Graham Co., North Carolina. His brother, Caswell, born in 1806 is listed as having been born in Graham Co., North Carolina.

Ivan, Malinda and family came to Arkansas in 1851.

John Ross stated in an affidavit that "Ivan Eddings was a guard in last council held back East"

* In 1825 the Cherokee national legislature established a capital called New Echota. In 1828 New Echota's people began printing a newspaper, The Cherokee Phonix in both Cherokee and English. The Cherokee Tribe was forced from it's land in 1838, to move Westward and there started the tragic Trail of Tears. New Echota is now a state historic site.
