James Morgan was born Aug 1842 in Morgan Co., IN, and died 1935 in Grundy Co., MO. He married Mary C. Terrell on 27 Jan 1867 in Scotland Co., MO (Vol I).

The Twenty-first Missouri Volunteer Infantry was formed on December 31, 1861, when Special Order #15 merged the understrength First and Second Northeast Missouri Regiments. It was made of men primarily from the Missouri Counties of Scotland, Knox, Lewis, Schuyler, Clark, and Adair but also included men from nearby Iowa and Illinois counties. The veterans forming the new regiment had gained combat experience suppressing Confederate insurgency in Northeastern Missouri, and many had fought victoriously on Aug. 5, 1861, at Athens, Missouri. Company I was mustered into service at Canton, Lewis County State of Missouri, the First day of February 1862 for the period of three years or during the war.

James Morgan, age 31, physical description as 5'4", light hair, gray eyes, dark complexion, single, a farmer who lived at Memphis, Scotland Co., MO was a Private in the Civil War, enlisting on 18 Jun 1861 and mustering in 1 Feb 1862 for a period of three years at Canton MO in Lt. Moore's Co I, 21st MO Infantry. In his duty, he was ordered to Pittsburg Landing, TN in Mar 1862. He was in the Battle of Shiloh, TN 6 and 7 Apr 1862. He participated in the advance on and siege of Corinth, MS 29 Apr to 30 May 1862. They were occupied at Corinth and also did a pursuit to Booneville MO from 31 May to 12 Jun 1862. His duty at Corinth lasted until Sep 1862. James was in the Battle of Inka, 19 Sep 1862. The company was involved in another Battle of Corinth 3 and 4 Oct 1862. He was involved in a pursuit to Ripley 5 thru 12 Oct 1862. He was connected with Grant's Central MS Campaign from Nov 1862 to Jan 1863. James Morgan was discharged with a disability on 26 Feb 1863. He returned to Scotland County, MO where he married in Jan 1867.

James and Mary moved to Grundy Co., MO after living a short time in Iowa and then spending some time in Illinois. There he was listed as a rail splitter and a log cutter. They remained in Grundy Co for the remainder of their lives.

James and Mary had seven children, four of them living in 1910.

It is anticipated that James' military service Pension File, when received, will shed some light on his family.
