Find Family

My interest in our family history began many years ago with the aquisition of the family tea service after the death of my grandmother in New Zealand. We were, at the time, living in the UK, and the service was engraved "To Farmer Cleughearn - John Morton - on his leaving East Kilbride for New Zealand, 1859, from his colleagues and friends".
After numerous dead ends, I managed to find details of John Morton and his forebears in East Kilbride, but no details of the NZ family.
The MORTON family originated in East Kilbride and Avondale in Lanarkshire, Scotland, and I have accumulated a large file of relevant (and irrelevant) information on the family and many of its' branches which directly relate to my original forebears.
Within these pages I include just some of that information, for the benefit of other researchers. It might be well worthwhile contacting me direct if you do not find what you are looking for, as I might have further relevant information for you.

My forebears begin with Thomas Morton of Avondale, Lanarkshire, Scotland, who was married to Janet Hepburn and had six children -five boys and one girl. His eldest son, Thomas, married Margaret Wilson of East Kilbride, and they had eight children - three sons and five daughters. Their third son, John, was my ggf. and emigrated in 1859 on the Cheviot to Invercargill, NZ. He married his first cousin Jane Vallance Morton, but she died giving birth to their 10th child after they arrived in NZ. He then married Janet (Jessie) Finlayson Stewart from Dunoon & Kilmun and had a further nine children - five girls and four boys - the youngest boy being my grandfather David Stewart Morton. By posting on the genealogy sites, the information relating to the NZ family was acquired. After that, as Topsy said, it just growed!!
I have briefly outlined the family connections in the file of that name, and the other files have full details garnered from Old Parish Records, Registers, Cemeteries, and research carried out by other members of the family and passed on to me.
Even though the files are chiefly relating to the Morton family, they contain many other names which could be of assistance to research being carried out on other families. I will be updating the files whenever I can, and will mark them accordingly to highlight the changes.
I have many gaps - who doesn't - but over the last eight years I have acquired much relevant - and irrelevant - information which may be of help to others. I well remember the feelings of frustration when I was first researching and getting nowhere. If you do not find what you want here, please do contact me as I may have something in my files. Please note that the information shown is in no way "official", merely the results of hours of delving into records etc.
