2. STEPHEN⁶ LOWDERMILK (WILLIAM⁵, JOHN HARRISON⁴, HANS JACOB³ LAUTERMILCH, HANS JACOB², VALENTIN¹) was born October 19, 1815, and died July 29, 1892 in Randolph, Co., NC. He married (1) HANNAH HINSHAW December 26, 1837 in Randolph, Co., NC, daughter of JACOB HINSHAW and MARY DAVIS. She was born January 21, 1819, and died January 06, 1863. He married (2) LARTHENIA WILLIAMS August 01, 1864 in Randolph, N.C..

Stephen had 9 children with Hannah and 4 children with Larthenia.

(Lowdermilk Researcher, Lucy Lowdermilk Wright, states that Stephen had 8 children with Hannah and 4 children with Lartheria.)

Anna B. Loudermilk of Taylorsville, NC shows children of Stephen to be: Albanah, William B, Ellen & W. Clark, Stanley, Clarkson, Artimichia, Huldah, Mary Ann Lowdermilk M. A. Cox and Elkana Lowdermilk. Children of Stephen and L. Williams are from info from Anna Loudermilk.

NOTE: " History of Lowdermilk Family, 1749 to Present - The William and Utha Cole Lowdermilk Family" compiled primarily by Mrs. Walter P. Heinzman (Ethel Lowdermilk Henizman) and typed 1975 by "Westher Hess." Mrs. Henizman got some of her information from Iola Lowdermilk, a very active genealogist. who descended from William and Youtha through their son Reuben.

A letter written by . . . William B. Lowdermilk in 1930 says:

"Four sons of Stephen Lowdermilk came west in the early seventies; namely Albinah, Stanley, Clarkson, and myself (Wm. B. Lowdermilk). Stanley died in Stuart, Iowa, in the spring of 1852 [Sic-1882] , leaving a wife and 2 sons. Clarkson died May 27, 1922 at Glen Elder, Kan., leaving his wife and 2 sons, Floyd and Doyle and 2 daughters; Florence McKaekney and Laura [Lora Ann] (Mrs. Wooster [Wister Carl] Lowdermilk). I landed here at Glen Elder 51 years ago when the cayotes and rattlesnakes were plentiful and have lived in or near Glen Elder since that time. I have a wife, 3 sons, Arthur, Charlie and Lloyd, and 5 grandchildren."

And there was this, apparently written by Iola Lowdermilk, or perhaps Ethel Heinzman.

"One relative (Jason Lowdermilk of Burr Oakl, Kan:) wrote me [refers to either Ethel Lowdermilk Henizman, Iola Lowdermilk or Westher Lowdermilk Hess] that "Will and Clark Lowdermilk, sons of Stephen, left their home for Ashboro, N C. on a Saturday morning in the early eighteen-seventies, with some beeswax to sell for their folks, and was to stay all night at their father's sister, Mrs. Frank Cox, and visit until Monday in Ashboro. They took two of their father's best horses, and after selling the wax, they headed for Iowa. When they did not come home on Monday, their folks began a hunt for them, but could not find any trace of them. Then the boys got to Iowa, they went to their Uncle Ashley Cravens (their Mother's sister's man) [note: according to information presented by Juanita Blankenship's research, she shows their sister, Huldah married to Ashley S. Craven?] and the Cravens wrote home to N.C. and told them that the boys were there. They were about 17 and 18 years old at the time."

"Ransom Lowdermilk told some of his descendants that Alson or Allison Lowdermilk got in trouble with one of his father's young slave girls, and when it was found that she was expecting a baby and the pressure became strong, his father sent him away; some thought to. Indiana. He may have changed his first name, for we can't find an record of Allison Lowdermilk."

NOTE: According to the History of Lowdermilk Family - 1749 to Present by Heiznman and Hess, it was Stephen who married Larthena Williams in 1864. However, the research done by Juanita Blankenship and Terri Adams reflects that Larthena Williams was the first wife of Stephen's son, Clarkson Lowdermilk. Given the deatg date of Elvira Hash it was probably Stephen's second wife. Further research is needed!

Mary Ellen was a descendant of a famous Holland-Dutch family which also was able to escape from the aftermath of the Reformation. Coming over to America in 1716 they settled with a Dutch colony near Fayetteville, NC.
