Sara Smith was born in Virginia in 1785 of Scotch-Irish parents. She married John HARTWELL around 1801 and their son, Lorenzo Dow HARTWELL, was born in 1803 in Franklin County, Va. John HARTWELL deserted Sara and Lorenzo around 1807. When Lorenzo and his wife, Cecily and their baby son, John L., left Virginia in 1831 they were accompanied by Lorenzo's Mother and she was with them when they moved to Illinois in 1837. Later she married Jacob Sanders and is buried near her son under the name of Sara Sanders.
