Notes for P
ETER HAIRSTON:
In the book, the Cooleemee Plantation and Its People, written in 1986, Peter W. Hairston write of the origins of the Hairston family beginning with Peter "the Imigrant". The book give an insight from the early beginnings to the present of the family. Peter the Immigrant fought with James Stuart, the Old Pretender, in the 1715 uprising of Southern Scotland. After their defeat, Peter escaped to Ireland where he married and where his children were born. In 1729, he brought the family to America. He was listed as a taxpayer in Donegal, Lancaster County, PA, in 1730. By 1747, they were living in Albermarle County, VA and supported an Orthodox Reformed Presbyterian Church.

The family moved South into Bedford and Campbell counties, and finally to Runnett Beg, now part of Franklin County, VA. During the French-Indian War, Robert Samuel and Andrew fought as officers and served as local officials.

In the book Prominent Families of Patrick and Henry Counties, there is additional information regarding the origin of the family. The name is derived from an old Scottish word "Hairst" meaning harvest and "one" meaning one who is born near harvest time. According to this account the "Hairstone" were staunch loyalists and owing to political disturbances moved from Scotland to England, then to Wales, over into Ireland, and back to Scotland. When James IV of Scotland ascended the English throne as James I, Peter Hairston's name appeared as one of the officers. After the disastrous "Field of Culloden" Peter gathered his family for the move to America. It is supposed that his wife, "an Irish lady of rank" died before he left Scotland. (This is in conflict with the aforementioned Account.) He brought with him to Virginia four sons and one daughter; one daughter, Agnes died during the voyage and was buried at sea. The other daughter married a Mr. Shelby.
