 Includes NotesNotes for Elizabeth Bevin:
from JORDAN JOURNAL, by Robert A. Jordan.

p. 4-4

After Richard Bavin died, Arthur Jordan, at the age of about 26, probably took over as head of the Bavin household and operation of the Bavin farm. Elizabeth Bavin must have been between the age of 16 and 19 in 1653. It would almost be a natural fact of life for Elizabeth to marry Arthur Jordan after living in the same household for a year after her father died.

Elizabeth's youth speaks out and Arthur's sense of fairness shows in a prenuptial contract of marriage between the two, dated April 12, 1654 (R.B. 1-149). The following is a shortened abstract of the contract, leaving out all of the "therefores," "aforesaids," and phrases such as "at any time, nor noe time hereafter."

"A marriage to be made and consummated between Arthur Jordan and Elizabeth Bavin, both of the parish of Southwarke, in the county of Surry, having mutually agreed upon certain conditions and consents to the following...that Arthur Jordan shall not, at any time, dispose of or make sale of a red mare or a filly or their female increase. Elizabeth Bavin, the owner, will never dispose of them, but if Arthur out lives her, they will remain in his hands as his personal estate, but never given away from the children lawfully begotten on her baody. But if Elizabeth out lives him, Arthur shall not give away any of the mares and their increase. Arthur may dispose of all male increase and is to have the first...that fall from the red mare. Also, according to the first article, Elizabeth is to have two cows called Browne and Sowerby, a yearling black heifer and a white bellied calf, fallen this year, with all their female increase."

Contract was signed in 1654, but not recorded until November 20, 1659. (People named their animals after their respected relatives and neighbors.)
