William met Lizzie while working with a man hunting cattle to buy, drive back to Gatesville where his father had collecting pens for a cattle drive. They stayed at John M. Bass's home. The family had an alter and the men were invited to worship with them. Will noticed Lizzie's beautiful singing voice and fell in love with her. He courted her by letter, and they didn't see one another again till the day before their wedding, about a year and a half later. The wedding was at her sister Johnnie's house in Milam Co., TX.

Graduated from Iowa State with highest honors. SAE fraternity.

Joined the Navy and served as an officer in the Korean War. Met wife, Caroyn Francis Reiner, in Hawaii in 1953, and married her at the Pearl Harbor Church. Both returned to Iowa, where Jim and his father, Phil,

bought Green Engineering and began Shive Engineers (later becoming Shive-Hattery Engineers). Top 1/2 of U.S. engineering firms at the time of his death.

Kay and Jim settled in Cedar Rapids, and in 1961 moved the family to a home they built at Lake Macbride in the Cottage Reserve area. They raised their family there, and resided at Lake Macbride until his untimely death at age 56. Jim was an avid runner, and very healthy. Struggled with high cholestrol, and watched his diet.

His death was due to a congenital heart defect.
