Statement of Service
Pension File
On this 25th day of January 1820 before me the subscriber, one of the judges of the Circuit Court of Law and Equity in and for the State aforesaid, personally appears Francis Merriman, aged about 66 or sixty-seven years, resident in Knox County in the circuit aforesaid, who being by me first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration, in order to obtain the pension made by the late act of Congress entitled" an act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the Revolutionary War " namely that he, the said Francis Merriman, enlisted in Powhatan county in the state of Virginia as a regular soldier of the Revolutionary War in the company commanded by Captain George Nicholas of the Second Regiment of Infantry of the Virginia Line.Said regiment commanded by Col.Spotswood; that said enlistment took place some time in the year 1776 shortly previous to the Declaration of Independence, the precise time not now recollected, and was in the term of three years; that he continued in the service of the United States under said enlistment for the full period thereof, when he was regularly discharged from service at or near Valley Forge in Pennsylvania; that he was in the battles of Brandywine; of Germantown; of Monmouth and of Stony - Point during said enlistment and afterward in a battle at Petersburg and at the surrender of Capt.Cornwallis, with many skirmishes at various places...
From "Summer Soldiers" by James C.Neagles
BRANDYWINE, PENNSYLVANIA:The battle at Brandywine was an attempt to prevent the British from marching on Philadelphia, then serving as the new nation's capitol. The Americans had a force of 10,000 to 15,000 men. After approximately 700 were killed or wounded and 400 captured, the Americans retreated leaving the British to occupy Philadelphia.
GERMANTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA: Following the British victory at Brandywine and occupation of Philadelphia, Washington planned an attack attempting to recapture it.The attack stalled at nearby Germantown and was turned back.At one point, two groups of Americans, confused by the heavy fog, mistakenly fired on each other. In British counterattack, approximately 152 were killed, 521 wounded, and 400 missing.Washington's army was then forced to spend the winter at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, coping with severe cold and shortages of supplies, clothing and food.
MONMOUTHD, NEW JERSEY:When the British decided to abandon Philadelphia, Washington's army followed them eastward across New Jersey.American forces occasionally harrassed the Britsh, but avoided a major confrontation until they reached Monmouth Courthouse, where Washington decided to attack in force. When the British counterattacked, the American General Charles Lee retreated in confusion.Washington personally stopped the disastrous retreat and rallied the men. They then fought off the Bristish attack and mounted their own counterattack forcing the British to withdraw and escape to New York.General Lee was subsequently courtmartialed for disobedience and misbehaviour during the battle.
