Mowery's research; David Rodeheffer,Sr. states in his will (Book "A" page 39) that his moveable estate is to be sold and the money divided up among his boys & girls. The females were not mentioned. More research is needed. David directs that his sons Samuel & David are to divide all of my land equally between them. David made a will, book "A" page 39 Shenandoah, Co. VA. on 12 Feb. 1773 & it was proved Tuesday, 22nd June 1773 which suggest David was terminally ill. Jurg Maurer the subject of this book, was a witness on his will. On the 1850 census of Shenandoah Co. Va. there are 49 individuals listed with the surname "Rodeheffer" that are assumed to be descendants of David Rodeheffer,Sr. Up until the early 1900s this surname was a very well known and respected surname in the county. The most used spelling variation is "Rodeheffer" The following data is from Cathy N. Rodeheffer, John Routson and this author; Robert S. Mowery. Cathy's research has found his middle name as Simon. Samuel Rodeheffer received a 292 acre land grant from Lord Fairfax's Proprietary Office, Mar. 30 1773, book "P" page 204, about 2 miles west of Woodstock Va. His neighbors were; John Adam Kelp, Philip Sonner, Henry Gochenour, George Maphis, Jacob Gochenour, Augustine Coffman, & John Hass (House, Hoy). Dysart Road and Back Road runs through the middle of property today. Jurg Maurer and family, (father-in-law) the subject of this book, lived about 1/2 mile NW of Samuel. This land is not far from this author's home and he has walked over some of this land when he was a young man. Today it is fertile open farm land. Samuel & Mary his wife, sold 1/2 of the 292 acres (146 acres) to his brother David Rodeheffer, Jr. Dec. 3 1774. (See county land map page in this section of book giving location.) In Sept. 1891 Samuel Rodeheffer bought a 1/2 acre lot # 44 in the town of Woodstock, VA. from Abraham Brubaker. Sold the said lot to Michael Ott on 9 April 1802. On 12 June 1815 Book "V" page 608, Samuel & Mary his wife sold lot # 18 in the town of Woodstock, VA. that he received from his brother in law Anthony Nisely, to Henry Gray. Deed book "K" page 125, On 13 Feb. 1796 Samuel bought lot #8 in the town of Woodstock, VA. from Abraham Brubaker. Samuel also bought 92 acres of mountain property from the Virginia Land Office on Nov. 14, 1794 listed in Book "W" page 412. The land was original part of 400 acres the was granted to William C. Williams. The land was located at the foot of North Mountain in Shenandoah Co., VA. His neighbors were: George Mavis, Philip Wilkins and Michael Barnett and others. The land was not far from his father-in-law Jurg Maurer. From the VA. land office records, In the year 1816 Samuel bought 1 3/4 acres of land that adjoined the land he presently lived on from Jacob Rinker. The chain carriers on the survey were; Andrew & Jacob Rodeheffer. He is listed in court records many times as a executor and property appraiser on estate settlements of his neighbors. He served several times on the Grand Jury. Samuel was drafted into the Rev. War to serve 3 months. He paid Frederick Bish to serve his 3 months as a substitute. Frederick Bish did the same earlier for Samuel's brother-in-law, Leonard Mourer. This data was researched by this author; Robert S. Mowery in the Shenandoah Co., VA. court records and it is noted Samuel wrote a detailed will and was proved in court 20 May1823. He appears to have prospered well in life as his estate settlement has a large inventory. There are several pages of data listing his personal estate in Shenandoah Co., VA. probate records. Many family members and neighbors bought items at the sale. Samuel directed in his will, what parts of his real estate his sons were to receive after his death. A short time later he changed his mind and amended the will. He then directed the said real estate was to be sold at public auction and proceeds to be divided. He is listed in the 1785 Shenandoah Co, Va, census with 8 white souls near Woodstock Va. A David Rodeheffer is living next to him on same census. Samuel was a son of David Rodeheffer, Sr. (wife: Catherina _______?) who died in Shenandoah Co. VA. before Feb. 20 1773. Children of David Rodeheffer, Sr. & Catherina ? Are: David Rodeheffer, Jr.- Born abt. 1739 *Samuel Simon Rodeheffer, ( the subject ) John Rodeheffer, Anthony Rodeheffer, who received a land grant in the Jerome Va. area. David's daughters names were not listed in the will, but stated his daughters were to share equally with his sons in the estate settlement. Jurg Maurer the subject of this book was a witness on David Rodeheffer's will, and signed his name in German as Jurg Maurer. To date no marriage license has been found on Mary Mourer & Samuel Rodehoffer. In Shenandoah Co. Will Book "C" page 76 the estate settlement of Jurg Mourer is listed. Samuel Rodehoffer is found receiving his wife's share of Jurg Maurer's the estate. On the 1850 census of Shenandoah Co. Va. there is listed 49 individuals with the surname "Rodeheffer" that is assumed to be descendants of David Rodeheffer,Sr. This author knew several Rodeheffer families as a young man in Shenandoah Co. VA. Up until the early 1900s this surname was a very well known and respected surname in the county. In the 1990s there were only 3 families of Rodeheffers listed in the Shenandoah Co. Va. phone book. The Rodeheffer surname is more prominent in neighboring Rockingham Co., VA. today. Notes for ANNA MARIA (MARY) MAURER: Mary's given name was Anna Maria. She was named after her mother Anna Maria, who also went by the given name Mary. This author; Robert S. This author has been to Lancaster, PA. several times researching for data on this family without success. She and her parent's surname spelling is listed as "MAURER". Her mother signed her will in German as; Anna Marie Maurer and she was named after her mother. She is listed in real estate sales as "Samuel Roadeheffer and Mary his wife". Listed as Mary in her estate settlement records in: Book "N" pages 405 & 409. Henry Kern was apointed her administrator in Jan. 1825. It is estimated her date of death was about Dec. 1824.
