Descendants of John Mourer, Sr.

Generation No. 1

      1. John2 Mourer, Sr. (Jurg1 Maurer) was born Abt. 1749, and died Abt. December 1833 in Shen.Co. Va.. He married Margaret Ziegler, daughter of George Ziegler. She died in Shen.Co. Va..

Notes for John Mourer, Sr.:
John's place and date of birth has not been determined at this writing. He is listed in his father's will dated, 15 Nov. 1775 and received his share of his father's estate in 1783. He is next found on the 1785 Shenandoah, Co. VA. census. He is also found paying personal property tax many times in said county.
John's surname sometimes spelled "Mowrer-Mowrey-Marr-Mowra". Most used spelling is, "Mourer". See; "Surname Spelling Variations" in front.
In Aug. 1762, a George Zeigler received a 300 acre Land Grant from Lord Fairfax's office. George Zeigler (sometimes spelled "Sigler") was killed in a Indian raid near his home on Narrow Passage Creek in 1765. See Waylands History of Shenandoah Co. VA., page 71. George Zigler was the father of 7 daughters and had no male heirs. One of the daughters was Margaret Zeigler, wife of said John Mourer. The 7 daughters, heirs of George Zeigler, sold the land to George Grandstaff. Six years later on, 11 July 1790, John Mourer & wife Margaret Zeigler Mourer bought 100 acres from George Grandstaff that was originally part of the 300 acre grant to her father George Zeigler by Lord Fairfax. The land was located about 2 miles west of Woodstock Va. with Coffmantown Road and Narrow Passage Creek traversing through it at this writing. The Mourer-Mowery families in Shenandoah Co. Va. resided on this land the next 4 generations. They were farmers & blacksmiths.
On the east side of said 100 acres, the state of Virginia granted in the year 1825, 1/2 acre of land to the inhibits of the community for a seminary and school of learning with John Mouer (Mowery) & Jacob Sheetz as trustees. This school became known as Elizabeth School. For more history on this school, see the book ; "REFLECTIONS" Early Schools of Shenandoah Co. Va. page 117. This school & meeting house is where the Mowery families were taught to read and write. This was also used as a church in the community. John Mourer had a deep belief in God and it is thought by this author, he and his descendants were leaders of the said church.
John Mourer & George Coffelt were trustees on 2 acres of land in the formation of the Lutheran Church and school on Stony Creek near Columbia Furnace & Cat Hollow area in 1809.
John Mourer wrote a will on, 29 June 1822 and recorded same in Will Book S, page 128 in Shenandoah, Co. VA. In the will he leaves the residue of his estate to his children and to Rebecca Mourer, daughter of my daughter Mary. The will was proved, 13 Jan. 1834.
On the original George Zeigler Grant land, there is a cemetery known today as the Haun-Carrier Cemetery. The cemetery has many grave markers of the Haun & Carrier surnames. There appears to be a lot of unmarked graves located there also. The cemetery had been badly neglected over the years with trees & brush overgrowth. The present day owner has done a excellent job cleaning up & restoring everything to what is thought to be original. A new fence has been installed. The owner needs to be commended for his work.
It is thought by the author, that George Zeigler is most likely buried there. A stone listing: Gransdorf, born 1740, died May 15 1823, is thought to be George Grandstaff's grave. Other Grandstaff family members reportedly are buried there also. The author feels John Mourer Sr. and many of his descendants are buried there in unmarked graves in this cemetery. Known family members that are buried there are; John Mowry Jr. 1824-1891 & wife Mary Susan Thompson Mowry with a marked grave and stone. Abraham Mowery 1834-1906 & wife Sarah Francis Peters Mowery buried there in a unmarked grave and no stone. Iva Kibler Wakeman a descendant of said Abraham Mowery remembers, as a small child visiting these graves many times with her family.
If anyone has more data or finds errors, please contact the author. The exact address & phone no. can be accessed through the Internet.

Notes for Margaret Ziegler:
Margaret's father George Zeigler was killed in a Indian Raid on his plantation at Narrow Passage Creek about 1765. See Waylands" History Of Shenandoah County" pages 71 & 72. No date of birth or death has been found on Margaret to date. It is assumed by this author that Margaret's father (George Zeigler) is buried in what is known today as the Haun - Carrier Cemetery. This cemetery is located on George Zeigler's original plantation. It is also assumed that John & Margaret Mourer and their son John Mourer Jr. & wife are buried there.
